Would you be happy with your obituary?

Story time from Stockholm-

Alfred Nobel

Alfred Nobel

I’m traveling in Sweden and love it here! There’s lots to do and the city is filled with little surprises.

Last night at dinner, there was a series of explosions!  Our server informed us that workers were dynamiting the subway to improve Stockholm’s underground transportation system.

Today, we took a boat tour and were reminded that dynamite was invented in Stockholm by a man named, Alfred Nobel, who also founded the Nobel Prize.

Here’s the story.

When Alfred’s brother, Ludvig died in France, newspapers there reported that Alfred had died, so the inventor had the interesting experience of reading his own obituary.

Al didn’t like the obit for at least two reasons.  First, he wasn’t yet dead and second, the report was rather blah.

The article mentioned he was a decent man, a good father and the inventor of dynamite.  But Alfred wanted the sum total of his life to be more, so he set aside some money to establish the Nobel Prize.

All of this begs the question:  If you died today, would you be happy with how people remember you?
