Why Google+ is better than Facebook

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

Internet marketer, Michael Angelo Caruso, gives social media training. If you’ve ever complained that Facebook takes too much time or isn’t a high even return-on investment, I have good news and bad news.

The good news is that Google+ is in many ways a better platform.  The bad news is that you want another social media account like you want another hole in your head.

But there are compelling reasons to get involved with G+ right away.

Let’s get this party started

Google is a rockin’ search engine, so it owns the playing field.  If we were all still kids, Google would own the playing field, the parking lot, the ball, and the air.

So, Google makes sure that G+ integrates across a number of Google products, including Google Buzz and Google Profiles.

Try this experiment.  If you have a fairly distinct name and you type it into Google, your Facebook page will probably rank fairly high.  But, if you have a Google profile, it will rank higher than your Facebook page.

Oh, and you probably have a Google profile even if you haven’t created one.  Why?  Because Google created one for you if you have a Gmail account.  When I discovered my unadorned Google profile a while back, it ranked higher than the Facebook that had been established for years!

Started in June 2011 as a test version, its popularity has grown by leaps and bounds. Google+ notices are posted inside users’ Gmail inbox, so it’s 100% real-time Gmail deliverability.

When you write about a subject on Google+ and your circle friends Google that subject, your comments and links are displayed automatically on page one of Google. No back-linking, no on-site optimization, just free traffic!

Still not convinced to use Google+?

Bill Douglass (bill@wsiwebsalesnow.com), a marketing expert at WSI Web Sales Now, has written about Google+’s interesting features and benefits:

•    A focus on targeted sharing within subsets of a social group (or what Google calls ‘Circles’).

•    A section specifically for viewing, managing and editing multimedia. Google+ includes an image editor, privacy options and sharing features.

•    ’Hangouts’ is becoming very popular. Instead of directly asking a friend to join a group chat, users instead click ‘start a hangout’ and they’re instantly in a video chat-room alone. At the same time, a message goes out to their social circles, letting them know that their friend is ‘hanging out’ and that they are invited to join.

Google+ is a terrific for Internet marketing

Google+ 100KB Michael Angelo Caruso blogJust like with Facebook, you can create a business page after you create a personal profile page.  Businesses are beginning to see the value of Google+ with the new Pages feature.

The new Google+ brand Pages look similar to Google+ Profiles, except for the little square icon that indicates that it’s a Page rather than a Profile.

Users can add brands to their circles, check out their information, and browse their photos. When users add a brand to their circles, it helps increase that brand’s follower count.

Here’s what you need to know about starting a business page on Google+:

•    Before you can create a Google+ Page for your business, you need a Google+ Profile. The ‘You+’ link on your Gmail dashboard will direct you to the Profile creation page.

•    Choose a category to begin. Local businesses is good for smaller, less well-known businesses. Product or brand would work for companies and larger known businesses. Company, institution, or organization is mainly for businesses that don’t directly sell something, mostly not-for-profits.

•    Personalize your page with a photo/logo and tagline. You can continue with an introduction, information, and contact information, and finish with a photo strip of five different photos.

•    For your business Page, you can create circles (networks), start posting information and news through your feed. You can also add your Google+ Page details to your existing website and share it via other networks.

Google+ is a lot of fun, too!

If you have your own website or online business, an efficient social profile Page using  Google+ will let you explore a whole new world of social media marketing, that is not only fun, but easy and profitable.

•    Google+ posts sent to “public” rank fairly well in Google search results. Merging Google properties into Google+ and integrating it with the search engines has a tremendous impact on where your company appears in search engine results pages (SERPs).

•    You can manage circles-distribute clients into specific categories and share different posts, news or deals with different circles accordingly. This is a great way to connect with fans and share information with clients.

•    ”Hangouts” is another great way to engage your customers and colleagues. It’s a high quality video chat that allows you to interact with your fans face to face. This interaction will allow you to get to know them, answer questions as well as get live product/service feedback. Businesses can also use “Hangouts” for video conferencing, to push live events and seminars to customers.

•    Use the Google+ badge to promote your site and your Google+ page. Google+ badge links your website with your Google+ page and lets others know you’re here. When a visitor likes your site and clicks the icon they will be taken directly to your Google+ page and will be able to share and follow your posts.

•    Google+ Direct allows people to simply enter a ‘+’ before your company name when searching on Google and get directly to your Google+ page.

•    The +1 button on Google+ is an ideal way to have customers spread the word about your business and its presence on Google+.  You can also connect your +1′s from your website to your +1′s on your Google+ page. People tend to trust recommendations from people they already know.

•    ”Ripples” is a Google+ tool that allows you to watch your posts and information as they travel across social networks.  You can easily determine who is sharing your content and who is paying attention to it.

•    With “analytics,” you can get information about your page’s followers, visitors, and the general traffic and social activity around your business.

Google+ is a game-changer

Google+ for business is unique in that it has blurred the lines between personal social networks such as Facebook, and business networks like LinkedIn.

Linkedin, by the way, has long been associated as one of the “Big Three” social media platforms.  As of last week, Infusionsoft (my CRM and a major player in the industry) announced that it’s social media integration will include a new Big Three:  Facebook, Twitter, and Google+.  Linkedin is being left out of the picture, at least for now.

I’m making Google+ an important part of my Internet marketing activity.  See you there!

Top 10 excuses for not being great

Top 10 Excuses For Not Being Great
from www.MichaelAngeloCaruso.com

Michael Angelo Caruso and Oscar blog greatEveryone has the ability to be great.  In fact, greatness is probably the most natural of all achievements.  So why don’t more of us achieve greatness?  One reason is that we get in our own way.  Another reason is that we often don’t receive the right amount of encouragement.

By the way, there are varying degrees of greatness.  You may never win an Oscar, for example, but you may get to hold one.  :-)

Here are the top ten excuses for not being great, along with some quick  advice on how you can achieve greatness.

Top 10 excuses for not being great

1. You don’t know how.

Huh? You’re kidding, right? You don’t know how to do something? I have one word for you: Google.

Need a book? Your public library has thousands and you won’t have to wait in line because nobody goes there.

Need tutelage? Hire a coach.

Information is more accessible now than any other point in history and most of it is free. Get good at accessing what you need to know. It’s your ticket to greatness.

2. You don’t know the right people.

As with information, people are more accessible than ever before. Nearly anyone you need to know can be found on Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin or YouTube.

Make yourself a little more available and you’re half way there.

The average person actually stops trying to be likable as he or she gets older. Most people on Facebook sign up about 145 friends and stop. Become a bit more psychologically attractive and you will connect with the right people.

3. You don’t have the money.

Dollar sign Michael Angelo Caruso blogThis is a math problem everyone can solve. There are two major ways that you can have more money.

The first way is to reduce expenses and save the extra money for whatever you’d like or need. Create a strict budget, and set aside a portion of your income. This may include sacrificing, a lost art among a society that strongly identifies with comfort.

The second way to have more money is to earn more. See “comfort” above. You can earn more by getting a better paying job, also known as “leaving your comfort zone.” Earning more often means working harder or at least applying yourself.

Would you like to double the amount of money you earn now? Get a second job! If you really want the money, you’ll do it.

One of the easiest ways to earn money is to proffer your intellectual property. You can do this by creating a short e-book that offers information on how to do something. You’re probably really good at something, right?

Tell others how to do it in a Word document, save the document to a .pdf that you can sell online and off. Sell ten e-books at $10 each and you’ll have an extra $100.

It doesn’t matter who you are, where you live or what the economical climate is like. Money is all around you. Go get it.

4. Someone else is already doing it.

Which came first, Copyblogger or Problogger? Groupon or Living Social? Dyson or Hoover? Yahoo or Hotmail?

You don’t know? Very few will people will care if you’re not first to market as long as your offering has a unique and worthwhile value.

A guy named Elisha Gray filed for a patent on a new invention called the telephone three hours after Alexander Graham Bell.

Count on it. Someone, somewhere is already doing what you’re doing. Work around them.

5. You’ll get to it later.

Maybe you’ll be great later. But history teaches us that life introduces all sorts of distractions in the game of life.

Face it, you’re only going to get busier.

Now is the time to put “greatness” on your calendar. Schedule it, then accomplish it. It’s called “greatness” partly because it’ll make you feel great!

6. You’re not ready for that level of success.

Success is a head game of sorts.

You’re trying to achieve something new, so how do you ever really know if you’re ready? What does “ready” even mean?

Stop making excuses and realize you’ll like life better when you’re in a better place.

Oh, you’re ready, trust me. And if greatness occurs and you’re not ready, you’ll get ready in a hurry.

7. There are too many obstacles.

This is true, but it’s not a good excuse for dodging greatness.

Heroes do things that others are unwilling or unable to do.

To find the treasure, you must be born into misfortune, get beat up by bad guys, be betrayed by your best friend, find love and lose it, and have a really bad accident.

And then, after you’re totally exhausted, you get to slay a dragon.

Hey, if being a hero was easy, everyone would do it.

8. You don’t have a (good) website.

A killer website is always useful for success and greatness. But if you don’t have one, you have options. If your current crappy website needs a redesign, hire someone to redesign it.

Meanwhile, you can promote, brand, and even sell from a free blog site. Post on other people’s blogs, but never promote yourself without permission. There are clever ways to sell on social media platforms.

Many people make money from affiliate marketing, which allows revenue to flow to you after you recommend products and services to your distribution list.

Website, schmebsite.

9. You’re too tired.

Being tired all the time is not normal.

Good health is important and certainly makes it easier to be great. Sufficient rest is part of good health. Go to bed earlier, if necessary, but establish a working rhythm that feels like success.

10. You’re just not confident enough.

There are two ways a human being comes into intelligence: genetic predisposition and learned behavior. Confidence is a learned behavior.

Listen to self-help programs and motivational messages. These total strangers will say things to you that your loved ones will not. It sounds implausible, but if you listen often enough to the right people, you will begin to believe there is greatness in you. And you know what? There is!

Yeah, you better not do social media

social networking michael angelo caruso blogReaders always write . .  .

I wish I could use your social media marketing advice, Michael, but I work at a small business in an industry that hasn’t embraced Facebook and the others.

We’re an automotive supplier, so social media probably wouldn’t work.  We sell 60,000 lb. steel coils to the auto manufacturers through US Steel.  Facebook wouldn’t appeal to Honda and Ford.   :-)

-Eric in Ohio

Facebook can work for any size biz

Hi, Eric and thanks for your message.

Sounds like your mind is made up and that’s fine, although it seems to me that’s the type of thinking that got tanked  the automotive industry in the first place.  I notice you didn’t write to ask, “How can I get social media to work with my special circumstances?”

While it’s true that Facebook may never be the primary sales modality for your specialty item, there are dozens of ways that social media can serve your great company:

-  Salespeople can have personal pages that make the sellers more accessible

-  You can start a company or business page

-  Use social media to monitor vendors, business partners, and the competition

-  Practice “defensive marketing,” especially on Twitter

-  And much more…

Facebook wouldn’t appeal to Ford!?

Huh? Ford Motor Company’s Facebook Fan Page has more than 850,000 fans.

One might guess that Asian-owned Honda corporation would be less likely to embrace social media, but the Honda Facebook Page has over 1.2 million fans.  Honda even has Fan pages for individual products.  The Honda Civic Facebook page, for example, has over 415,000 fans.

Ford’s social media department is run by Scott Monty (2,847 Facebook friends), who oversees multiple pages on various social media platforms, including Twitter and Facebook.

US Steel currently has a marginal Facebook presence, but that can change in a hurry.

So, there are  lot of good reasons that a company selling 60,000 lb. steel coils should be active on Facebook, but consider an even more likely scenario, Dale.

Results are in your future

You may not be doing what you’re doing now in ten or even five years. Perhaps you’ll want to start a business of your own or become a consultant one day.  Of course, you’ll want to work from an existing Internet presence and fan base, both of which you can develop using Facebook and other social media platforms.  Right now.

Dig the well before you need the water, brother.

Sincerely, Michael

P.S.  Let’s connect for fun on Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter and/or YouTube.  I’ll help you make money when you get there.  Order my “how to” audio CD/e-book when you’re ready.

Success feeds success

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

I’ve been very fortunate to have a lot of balls in the air this year.

Of course, I’m no Vova, so this type of juggling act might seem undesirable, but something about working on a lot of projects has been paying off.

I liken it to what happens when you know a bunch of people and some of those people start talking about you to other people and before you know it, a business referral comes through.

A similar phenomenon occurs when you are able to Tweet about something that happened to you on Facebook and you reach someone who didn’t see it in the first modality.

Recently, I blogged about something in the news and then got a call from a radio station requesting an interview.

Do you see how juggling a lot of balls can pay off?

A while back, I posted a blog about how I was got a speaking gig with a government agency affiliated with the Pentagon by giving social media tips to a Facebook buddy who happened to be working for the Fed.  Rick Broida at BNET picked up the story and blasted out his version on BNET.  Pretty cool!

The morale to the story, I guess, is to put the ball in play.  Heck, put several balls in play!

5 cool ideas from junk food

Monday, August 29th, 2011

No country has done a better job than America when it comes to inventing,  branding, producing, marketing and of course, eating junk food.

Manny Fernandez, of the New York Times, has written a terrific article on some of the great moments in junk-food history.  I’ve incorporated a few of the facts from his piece into this blog post.

Each of these five success stories offers a great marketing lesson. Here are 5 Cool Ideas from the evolution of junk food:

1.  Make it something else.

Cracker Jack Michael Angelo Caruso blogTwo street vendor brothers, Frederick and Louis Rueckheim, sold a popcorn-molasses-peanut confection at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893.  They perfected their recipe by 1896 and called it “Cracker Jack.”  Think of it as popcorn with clothes.

2.  Packaging, price, and marketing all work together.

Tootsie Rolls were manufactured in New York City starting in 1905, changed junk food with one simple marketing twist.  It was the first penny candy to be individually wrapped.   Consumers loved the idea!

3.  Sometimes good ideas will wait.

Popsicles Michael Angelo Caruso blogOne unusually frigid night in San Francisco in 1905, 11-year-old Frankie Epperson accidentally left a powdered-soda drink he had made for himself on the porch with the stirring stick still in the cup.

The next morning, he awoke to find a frozen concoction, on a stick.

Frankie went on with his life, eventually going into real estate. It was not until 1923 that Mr. Epperson finally applied for a patent for his discovery. These days, Unilever sells two billion of them in the United States each year.

Mr. Epperson initially called his product Epsicles. His children gave it another name: Pop’s Icles [popsicles].

4.  Bad scenarios can be an advantage.

James A. Dewar was the manager of a baking plant in Chicago during the Great Depression. He noticed that the shortcake pans that were used during the strawberry season sat idle the rest of the year. So he baked little cakes in the pans and injected them with a banana cream filling. He dubbed them “Twinkies” (a name inspired by a billboard he passed advertising Twinkle Toe shoes) and sold them two for a nickel.

When bananas were rationed during World War II, the banana cream center was replaced with vanilla cream. Today, Hostess bakes 500 million Twinkies a year.

5.  Get more players on your team.

Big gulp Michael Angelo Caruso blog7-Eleven convenience stores helped introduce the super-sizing via products such as the 32-ounce Big Gulp.  In 1988, the company started selling the 64-ounce Double Gulp.

In 1998, the utility tub known as the Big Gulp was refined and redesigned. The new cup was taller, and now it fit in most car cup holders. Junk food is constantly being made more convenient.

Summary

Huge marketing dollars played a key role in all of the above success stories.  Today, large campaigns are launched literally free through social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.

The good news is that you can pull off successful campaigns with very little capital.  The bad news is there is much more junk food in our future.

We recycle garbage, why not compliments?

Saturday, August 6th, 2011
Michael Wickett Michael Angelo Caruso

With the great motivational speaker, Michael Wickett

Everyone’s turning green!  Recycling trash has become a major initiative for most of us.

Why not recycle good vibrations, too?  Compliments, for example, can be re-purposed over and over.  Do it right and hardly anyone will think you are bragging on yourself.

Consider how Dean La Doucer, Executive Director of the Southfield Area Chamber of Commerce in Michigan, introduced me at a speaking gig last week:

“I’ve had the pleasure of knowing many of the speaking greats over the past twenty five years, including Og Mandino, Dr. Susan Jeffers, Dr. Wayne Dyer, Michael Wickett, and Les Brown. I include Michael Angelo Caruso in that company!”

Be your own publicity firm

I was very impressed by Dean’s kind words.  The audience was impressed, too.  And if I recycle this great compliment, others can enjoy the message.

Here are some ways I can re-purpose what Dean said:

- Share it as a post on my Facebook

- Create a Facebook Note like this one

- Ask Dean to post as a Recommendation on Linkedin

- Write a blog post about it

- Put the story in a speech

- Use the testimonial to show others how to recycle compliments

- Record a video of me telling the story; post the vid on YouTube

- Ask Dean to record a video testimonial

- Shorten the quote and post as a Tweet

Recycle the nice things people say about you

Be strategic when using this marketing strategy.  Sharing these kinds of compliments can sometimes make you appear to be arrogant or cocky.

On the other hand, forwarding positive messages about your good work is in your best interest, right?  So, get out there and recycle!

Facebook is the biggest communication revolution since the invention of the telephone.

Initially known as “a good way to meet chicks,” Facebook is now a solid promotional tool that moves millions of dollars in products and services all over the world.  And for the most part, it’s free.

You’d think people would be adding people to their FB network like crazy, yet the average FB user only has around 165 friends.  Amazing.

Friend people with more friends than you

If you’re too lazy to build your own network, there is another strategy you can use.  Hitch your wagon to people with bigger wagons, by friending folks with large networks.  I’ve even started a Facebook sub-list I call 3K, which indicates which of my FB buddies has at least 3,000 friends.

By the way, I probably have a bigger wagon than you, which means that by connecting with me, you are increasing your marketing reach without even taking time to build your list.

Like I’ve indicated, this shouldn’t be your “Plan A,” but it works.

The second most important web site for your business

Sunday, June 19th, 2011

Internet marketers and business owners always ask me where they should be putting their marketing efforts.  Of course, your company Web site is a critical place for you to spend time and money.

But what’s the second most important Web site for your business?  I’ll give you a hint.

It’s not Linkedin.  And it’s not your Linkedin business page, although you should have one.

It’s not your Facebook page.  And it’s not your Facebook business page.  You should have one of those, too.

The second most important Web site for your business is not YouTube.

It’s not even Google.

These are all valuable sites for marketing your products and services, but the one site that should be a part of every online business in 2009 is …

Twitter.

Here’s why in one sentence–Google crawls individual Tweets.

You can post Facebook status updates all day and night, but Google will not see them.  The same is true for your Linkedin status updates.

But, Google indexes your individual messages on Twitter and makes them available to people doing Web searches forever.  Of course, you’ll be putting key words in your Tweets, but imagine what will happen when you’re putting your Web site address (or an abbreviated version of it) in 80% of your Tweets.

This is probably hard to imagine because Facebook and Linkedin don’t work like this.  Twitter is more powerful than Facebook and Linkedin combined!

That’s why, if you aren’t using Twitter, you are missing out on the greatest opportunity for building relationships with your customers and prospects.  You are missing out on the best free branding tool on the web.

And you are missing out on huge amounts of free traffic and increased sales!

There’s just no excuse for any business, large or small, to not be using Twitter, which has improved my reach immensely.  I’m on Twitter at @MichaelACaruso

Oh, and you’re doing social media wrong

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

Is social media not fun for you anymore?

Lots of people are frustrated by Facebook and confused by Twitter.  They’re spending lots of time posting and setting up business pages, but not getting much for their efforts.

When things aren’t going right, it can be helpful to look at what you’re doing wrong.  I can help you in at least two ways.

1.)  I’m holding a cool social media event on Tuesday, June 14 in Troy, Michigan.  This event really is social.  There’ll be food, drink, music, and conviviality, whatever that is.

2.)  If you can’t attend, you can get the content on audio CD.  Use the Coupon Code SOCIAL to save a whopping $33, if you order within the next 24 hours.

Either way, you’ll get a ton of great information on how to improve your situation using the most revolutionary communication tool since the invention of the telephone–social media, baby.

Can I be direct with you?

Internet marketer, Michael Angelo Caruso, gives social media training. I think one of the reasons for my success in the speaking and training business is that I’m a direct person.  I tell clients what they’re doing right and I tell them what they’re doing wrong.  I tell them exactly how to improve.

Not everyone likes my style.  Heck, I don’t like being told I’m wrong.  But when I get over my ego issues and really pay attention, I improve.

So, here I go again, being direct.  I hope it helps you improve.  Based on what I’m seeing out there…

Here’s what you’re doing wrong on social media:

Your accounts are stagnant.

You’re busy on Facebook, but not productive.

You’re selling too much and closing too little.

You follow the wrong people on Twitter.

You don’t allow comments on your blog.

You add people online, but don’t follow up in any meaningful way.

You have ads on your blog.

You’re not using RSS feeds.

Your blog posts are too short.

Your videos are too long.

You don’t follow people back.

You curse online.

You don’t “Facebook with purpose.”

You push the same updates to every platform.

You don’t edit your photos before posting.

You’re not producing enough content.

Want to know more?

Want to fix what’s wrong?  Wanna know what you’re doing right?

Then attend my great social media event on Tuesday evening, June 14 at the fabulous Tre Monti restaurant in Troy, Michigan.

If you can’t attend, order my Social Media That Works program on (4 audio CDs).  Use Coupon Code:  SOCIAL to get 1/3 off; save $33, but only for the next 24 hours!)

Let’s get your social media campaigns humming so more people can purchase your great products and services!
