Best practices for using Twitter

Saturday, May 28th, 2011

Want to get more from Twitter?  Here’s a list of best practices that’ll help you maximize the awesome power of this great social media tool.

Twitter is not as difficult or as mysterious as it first seems.  As Bob Dylan sings, “The times, they are a changin.’”  Thanks to Twitter, now you are the newspaper.  You are your own advertising company and public relations firm.  Let’s get the word out!

Here are 5 cool ideas for using Twitter:

1.  Talk about things central to your brand or personality.
It helps if your tweets are relevant to what’s going on in the media.  “Trending” topics almost always get more attention online.

2.  Be funny. If you’re not funny, tweet messages from people who are funny.  People like to share witticisms.

3.  Post an original tweet about every two hours. Do not share information that’s been shared to death.  Avoid clichés like the plague.  ;-)    You may also want to stay away from negative news.

4.  Leave trails to your Web site. Use the first 70 characters of your Tweet to ask a question or pose a problem.  Use the second 70 characters to answer the question or offer a solution.  Often, but not always, the solution should contain a link to your Web site.  Use tiny URLs that don’t use a lot of characters.

5.  Get with the program. Follow those who follow you.  Retweet messages from the cool kids.   Recommend people on Follow Friday, by posting “#FF” and their Twitter names, e.g., @MichaelACaruso.

These are just a few ideas for sweet tweets.  See how you can use these techniques and more by following me on Twitter at @MichaelACaruso.

facebook, linkedin, twitter, youtube icons Michael Angelo Caruso social mediaSocial media has become a monster way to build networks, promote products and services, and build an impressive Internet presence.

Just think what happens to your online profile when in addition to a Website and a blog, you have an account with Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, Google+ and others.  (My links are below.)

To see how this works for people like me, simply type my full name into your favorite search engine.  See how I own the first ten pages of Google, for example?  Pretty cool!  You can do the same if you spend a little time and energy on social media networking.

Here are links to my favorite social media networks.  Simply click on the link to friend, follow or connect with me.  If we’re already connected, feel free to post “hello,” a compliment or whatever’s on your mind.

I’m big on Linkedin, Twitter, YouTube, Google+, and Facebook.  To connect with me on any or all these platforms, simply type “Michael Angelo Caruso” in the respective search box.

Okay, so I’ve given you my social media links.  Feel free to leave yours in the comments section.  What is your favorite social media platform?

If you have a social media following, you may want to share information about what you do to these folks.  Direct selling is considered bad form on Facebook, for example, so you may want to use a technique I invented called, “indirect selling.”  To learn more, listen to my Social Marketing for Business CDs.

Resume tip–your resume doesn’t matter

Sunday, March 6th, 2011

Readers always write…

Hi, Michael-

I’ve recently had to update my resume so I can upgrade my job.  I consider myself a good writer, but it’s been quite a challenge getting this project done.  I’m still not happy with my resume and wondering if you have any tips for me.  I’ve attached a copy to this e-mail message.  Thank you!

Sara in Bloomington, Illinois

Hi, Sara-

A lot of the best jobs are filled without using the resume process.  The best way to get a good job is through networking, which allows you to become recommended or “pre-approved” by a trusted third-party.  More info on how to do this in a future post.

So now that I’ve told you that a resume doesn’t matter, let me explain how you can make yours better…

Your resume looks very good, Sara!  I’m returning it to you with a few minor suggestions for improved grammar and syntax.  I am also listing my advice on how to “punch up” a resume.

Tips:

-  All the experts recommend a one-page resume
-  Play down past jobs (use one or two lines max for each)
-  Use present tense for present situation, e.g. “demonstrated” should be “demonstrates”
-  Use parallel construction for bullet points; begin each bullet with an active verb

Bonus ideas

Here are a couple of special “Michael techniques:”

/Recycle the exact language from the job posting.

/That way, your resume is more likely to make you look like the perfect fit.

/The resume is a kind of meaningless tradition.  It’s far better to secure the job first and then submit the resume as a required formality.

/So, how does one get the job before submitting the resume?  Use online research tools such as Linkedin and Google to learn more about the company.   Of course, you should visit the company’s Web site, but learn even more about the specific people involved such as:

-  Who will be interviewing you?
-  Who will you be working with?
-  Who will be your boss?
-  Who is your potential boss’s boss?
-  What can be learned from their social media or YouTube activities?

Once you have the names of these individuals, search them online to discover anything you can, such as:

-  Where they live?
-  What church do they attend?
-  Do they blog?
-  What they’ve presented on (presentation pdfs often come up in this type of search)

The idea is to get into the same orbit of one or more of these people so they can get to know you and possibly champion your cause.

Caveat:  Don’t be aggressive or even assertive when doing this.  A sincere compliment when friending someone on Facebook will usually do the trick.  You might contact the person to offer insightful research on one of their
favorite topics.  Don’t necessarily make it known that you are applying for a job.

When you show interest in others, others show interest in you.     -Michael Angelo Caruso, American author and speaker, (1958-present –ha!)

Then, when the moment is right, say something like, “Oh, by the way, the reason for my interest in xxxxx is that I’m thinking of applying for the xxxxx position.”

You’re on your way to a some useful information, an endorsement, a champion, and hopefully, a new job!

Good luck!

5 reasons to blog–even if nobody reads it

Friday, February 25th, 2011

Michael Angelo Caruso blogging Internet marketingMost people haven’t figured out blogging, yet. That’s because blogging, that is writing, is a discipline like playing the trumpet or flying an airplane.  Or juggling.  It takes time and effort to make it worthwhile.  It also helps to be motivated, which usually happens when one is a little knowledgeable about the discipline.

Here are 5 reasons to blog, even if nobody reads it, followed by a chance for you to learn more from a soccer mom I interviewed who now gets paid to blog for other people.

1.  Search perks. Internet search engines love fresh content.  Since blogs, especially WordPress blogs, are easily updated your company is more likely to be found even if you create a blog post once per week.   Blogs are the new Web sites.

2.  Perpetual value. Time and again, I am contacted by people who tell me they read an old blog post and liked what I had to say.  Some of these folks turn into customers.  Your blog content keeps working for you year after year!

3.  Drip marketing. Periodic blog posts are a great way to keep in touch.  People will never forget about you because they are always being reminded.  Rig your social media sites to automatically post blog articles.

4.  Virtual salesperson. SAP advertises training services in a sidebar on its blog.  Wegmans grocery store blogs about recipes that use their food products.

5.  Massive public relations reach. If your blog is consistently good, you may get picked up by an aggregation service.  When this happens, your lil’ ol’ blog could be read by hundreds of thousands of people!

Facebook is not Internet marketing

Sunday, February 20th, 2011

Michael Angelo Caruso Internet marketing facebook, linked, twitter, social mediaSo you’re spending hours on Facebook (FB) building a “brand” so you can earn “extra revenue” that will allow you to “retire.”

Let’s be serious.

If you’re marketing on Facebook but not on Twitter (TW), you’re wasting your time.  Why?  Because the Internet works in the aggregate, that’s why.

A healthy Facebook following means little compared to a healthy following on the Big Three social media platforms–FB, TW, and Linkedin (LI), with a YouTube presence added to the mix.

Each of these platforms offers something special to the branding process, more colors, if you will.  You wouldn’t fill your wardrobe with only navy blue shirts and pants, would you?

Twitter, for example, is more important than Facebook and Linkedin combined, for example, because search engines such as Google crawl individual tweets.  This is extremely important to driving traffic to your Web site!

Essentially, we’re talking about doing things that drive traffic to your Web site and money to your bank account.  This is done by systematically developing your brand using important, albeit inexpensive web online platforms, so beware of “social media experts”  who only want to help you with Facebook because “that’s all you need.”

Here are two training options that I offer clients–

I can finally recommend a credit card processor!

Saturday, February 5th, 2011

I just interviewed Bill Pirtle, my new bff, on how to save money with credit card processing.

He’s my new best friend because he showed me how to save a bunch of money on my monthly credit card processing statement.

Let’s review:  Bill Pirtle showed me how to save money on my MONTHLY statement, which I receive every 30 days, 12 MONTHS per year, EVERY YEAR that I own a business (the rest of my life).  That’s a lotta green.

Consider that I sell over 75 information products and have people all over the country register for my live training events via credit card payment.

Bill first got my attention when he pointed out that I didn’t need to pay a $175 annual PCI fee.  His company doesn’t charge anything for this!

Then I read his terrific book, Navigating Through the Risks of Credit Card Processing.

You can reach Bill Pirtle via most social media platforms and at 734-272-6177.

Here are some highlights from the interview, which will soon be available on audio CD through www.MichaelAngeloCaruso.com.

Q:  What is one of the biggest mistake business owners make when signing with a credit card processor?
A:  When they focus on the rate alone.

Q:  What’s wrong with focusing on the rate?
A:  Many processing agents use a “teaser” rate to get you to sign while placing up to 40 other fee types into the contract. These fees include transaction fees, authorization fees, batch fees, AVS fees, statement fees, annual fees, PCI Fees and some are even adding something called an “IRS Reporting fee”.

Q:  How can merchants tell if they need a review of their processing?
A:  There are several signs including:  unexplained fees and surcharges on most of your transactions.

Add all of your fees from each section of your statement divide total by net sales and then multiply by 100. This gives the effective rate, the percentage of your sales that you pay in fees. If fees higher than you thought you should be paying, you need a review.

Q:  True or false, reductions in rate are always best way to save money?
A:  False!  Reviewing a contract is more than reviewing rates. It is to review the policies and procedures of processing credit cards. Finding cause of non-qualified transactions and correcting can reduce fees several times more than just changing rates.

Q:  Besides rates, what is something business owners need to know?
A:  There is no such thing as a free terminal. A “free” terminal will result in added fees somewhere in the contract.

Bill’s special offer

If you share your complicated, hard-to-read credit card processing statement with him, he will show you how to save money within 6 minutes.  This valuable assessment normally costs $99, but it’s available to you at no charge if you mention my name to Bill when you call him at 734-272-6177.

Finally, I can heartily and enthusiastically recommend a credit card processing vendor!

Have a Linkedin business page, yet?

Linkedin logoReaders always write . .  .

Here’s a great Linkedin question from  a clever guy who’s figured out how to put his business phone number into his “Name” field.  Very smart!

Michael,

Great presentation on Jan 14 in Macomb County!

Question: Even though Google doesn’t crawl LinkedIn, does a corporate website listed on a LinkedIn page still count toward adding external links to a site?

Dan Wolan, Director of Sales, Productions Plus – The Talent Shop

Dear Dan,

Hi, Dan and thanks for your kind compliment about my social media class.

Your personal LI page ranks on Google when you search your name and it will recognize your business page, as well.

However, Google does not crawl DEEP into Linkedin (LI) or, for that matter, Facebook.

Google, for example, may recognize the TITLE of the .pdf you post on Linkedin, but not the content.

Think of religion, as a metaphor.  People believe in God, but not enough to go to church every Sunday.  :-)

Class has ended, go in peace.

Article marketing – selling without selling

5 Cool Ideas for Article Marketing – Selling Without Selling
From www.MichaelAngeloCaruso.com

Here’s a great way to sell without seeming like a salesperson.  It’s called “article marketing.”

Article marketing tips with Michael Angelo CarusoThe first syllable of “article” is “art” and there is an art to creating useful content.  Article marketing is certainly more time consuming than posting a status update on your Facebook business page, but the payback can be huge.

If you can write, it’s best to create original content, but here’s how you can reconstitute info from articles written by others.

Copy/paste the content from one or two well-written articles into Notepad on your PC.  You can open the Notepad program by clicking Start/Programs/Accessories.  Notepad will strip out all the hidden code.

Copy/paste the content from Notepad into a fresh Word document.   Then, start rewriting by moving paragraphs around, reversing sentence order, and doing word substitution.  You want to change about 75% of the article to make the article your own and avoid plagiarizing.

Sometimes, it’s a good idea to retain some brilliant quote or well-turned phrase from the article you have not written.  It’s okay to do this if you provide attribution by including the author’s name, title and company or location.

Finally, it’s important to identify and include your favorite key words in in the article.  Key words, of course, will help people find your article when they search the Internet.  Make sure these key words are in three places:

a)    The title of the article
b)    The first paragraph—ideally the first sentence—of the article.
c)    The last paragraph—ideally the last sentence—of the article.

Here are 5 ways to repurpose the content of your new article and get the most from your online marketing efforts:

1)    Post the article on your Web site.
2)    Post a version of the article as a Facebook Note.
3)    Use a 140 character excerpt of the article as a status update or Tweet.
4)    Post the article on a free article depot site, such as www.EzineArticle.com
5)    Create a .pdf of the article and post it on your Linkedin page.

Articles that are written in an “evergreen” format can be reposted and reshared, if they don’t contain dated information.

Article marketing is a fantastic way to sell without selling.

Social media tip from Jan 14 class, tickets still available

Friday, January 7th, 2011

Facebook fWe’re just into the New Year and everyone is thinking about ways to make 2011 even better than 2o1o.

Here’s a free Facebook tip to help you improve online marketing efforts, followed by a special invitation to a low-dough training event I’m doing with Russ Cuthrell on January 14, 2011.  (As of today, there are only 20 seats left!)

The Facebook tip involves your Info page.  The average FB user posts long, frequent messages on her wall, but skimps when posting content on her Info page.

She thinks that sending “salesy” messages and posts to FB friends will carry the day and often worries about putting too much “personal” information on her Info page.  This type of thinking is counter-intuitive and will harm Facebook marketing efforts.  Here’s why . . .

Facebook, like all pages on the Internet, functions on the existence of keywords.  The Info page is a terrific place to place keywords, but this only occurs, if you type long answers into the template!

Remember that FB uses the content on your Info page to connect you with like-minded people–the very same people who are likely to be interested in what you’re selling.  FB can do this best when you list your favorite quotations, music, books, location, etc.

You’re not giving up anything valuable like your social security or driver’s license number.  Facebook has over 40 privacy buttons to filter out any troublemakers.

If you are doing business, you need to be found online

5 ways to promote a speaker

Sunday, January 2nd, 2011

Have you booked a speaker for an upcoming event?  Here are some easy ways to get the most people to attend and make this your best seminar, fundraiser, or convention keynote.

Rotaract talk in LA face right 0608 WEB1.  Get on the speaker’s mailing list.

You and your committee members should subscribe to the speaker’s mailing list as soon as you hire him or her.  (My free newsletter is available at 5 Cool Ideas newsletter ).

Once in the loop, you’ll receive periodic updates from your speaker that will keep you thinking of fresh ways to promote your event.  For example, my newsletter contains practical communication tips and  you can use the publication to attract interest and encourage registrations for your event.

You can republish these great communication tips in your newsletter, on your Website, and on blogs.  You may also forward the 5 Cool Ideas to your distribution list.

2.  Use positive adjectives.

Inform people of your special guest speaker by providing key links (one at a time).  People who hire me find it useful to provide these links:

www.MichaelAngeloCaruso.com
www.michaelangelocaruso.com/michael-angelo-caruso-blog/
www.youtube.com/results?search_query=michael+angelo+caruso&aq=f

Always use positive adjectives to describe your event, the food being served, the entertainment, and your speaker.  Psychologists tells us that words such as fantastic, memorable, exciting, and funny are extremely effective persuasion tools.

3.  Social media is effective and free!

I have developed a HUGE Facebook following.  When you hire me, post details of your event on my personal page (4,600 friends) or fan page (look for the avatar with me holding a microphone).

Ask me to post a personal message on your Facebook group page.  Continue to build your following on Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, and YouTube and you’ll have less trouble getting audiences to attend your events.

You Tube logo resized disproportioned
4.  Video marketing is the best way to promote speakers.

In the old days—way back in the early 1990s,lol—the best way to promote a speaker was to distribute a flyer.  Now you have your prospective attendees watch and listen to a speaker on video.

This sells tickets like crazy, providing the video is well done and the speaker knows his stuff.  As an example, follow these steps to harness the awesome power of video marketing:

a. Search the name of your speaker or “Michael Angelo Caruso” on YouTube.
b. Select a video that you want to use.
c. Click the “Like” and “Subscribe” buttons, so you’ll receive notification of whenever a new video is posted.
d. Post a Comment; say something nice about me and then reference your event.  Be sure to include a link to your landing page so people can register or buy tickets.
e. Share the video on Facebook, your other social media pages, and even on your organization’s Web page.
f. Copy/paste the video’s URL into your e-mail blasts along with your personal endorsement.  Never underestimate the value of your personal recommendation.

5.  Sell tickets five at a time.

People don’t like to attend events alone, so why sell tickets that way?  Ask your Web person to arrange an online registration page that defaults to ticket blocks of five and ten, with an option to order a single ticket.  You might offer a free ticket if someone purchases ten.

Have fun with your promotions and others will, too!  Best of luck with your event!
