Labor Day doesn’t celebrate working harder

Friday, September 2nd, 2011

american flag michael angelo caruso labor day blogHappy Labor Day!

This long weekend signifies the end of summer, gives folks a chance to take a breath before the school year kicks in, and allows Americans to celebrate … work?!

Not many people know that the patriotic Labor Day holiday has its roots in Canada.  U.S. President Grover Cleveland fast tracked the first official Labor Day in 1882.  The timing and even the name of the event was largely due to the pressured politics of the day.

Why work once and get paid once?

Most people labor under what I call the “Work Once, Get Paid Once Model.”  Hourly workers, for example, toil for 60-minutes and get paid for that 60-minutes.  Many workers get paid upon the completion of a project.

I practice the “Work Once, Get Paid Forever” model.  As an information marketer, I create print books, e-books, audio programs, and DVDs and then sell them in perpetuity.

I usually create “evergreen” content that only requires slight revisions, so once the product is created, I can go on to other things, while that product continues to generate passive revenue.

You’re an expert, why not cash in?

Malcolm Gladwell, in his great book, OutliersThe Story of Success, claims that anyone who works at something for 10,000 hours is, for all intents and purposes, an industry expert.

In other words, if you’ve worked in an industry 40 hours per week for five years, you’re probably more than capable of creating passive income from an information product.

As a bonus, being known as an author will give your reputation a bit of a shine.

Coaching opens doors, fast tracks success

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

Every Tuesday, a talented young man from Dubuque, Iowa calls my personal cell phone.

We’ve only met once, but now have a deep relationship that has changed us both in many positive ways.

Josh Jasper

Josh Jasper

His name is Josh Jasper and he is Executive Director at Riverview Center, a non-profit entity specializing in the prevention of domestic violence.

Josh and I meet for an hour by phone once a week and he’s made some amazing progress in a short period of time.  He’s made HUGE headway in the following areas:

  • Awareness–We’ve planted some ideas in Josh’s noggin for becoming an even better speaker.  He’s already benefited from a few of these.  Some will come to fruition in a few more talks.
  • Lead generation–Josh now has at least a quasi-system for getting more speaking gigs by working with a special network of people that we’ve identified.
  • Info products gift–I’ve sent Mr. Jasper some of my books and audio programs.  This material offers many ways any speaker or writer can sharpen his game.
  • We’ve produced Josh’s very first audio program! He now has a master copy of the recording we did a couple weeks ago.
  • His first book! We’ve got the beginnings of Josh’s first book.  He’s about to become an author–very exciting!

A customized coaching program is available to the right kind of candidate.  I don’t accept everyone as a client, but am willing to speak with you, if you’re interested in fast-tracking your career by becoming an industry expert.

Coaching has worked for me.  I have a long list of mentors, including Jim Pawlak, Bill Douglass, Alex Mandossian, and many others.  I look forward to helping you!

New Year’s resolutions that pay big dividends

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

31If you’re like me, you’re looking for ways to have a better year starting January 1.

Below are nine  easy ways you can become an even better person in 2010.  Call them New Year’s Resolutions, goals or whatever, they offer a great return on investment.

Many of these improvements offer a double dip.  If you become a better leader at work, for example, you are likely to become a better leader at home or for your condo association.

I’ve created easy-to-read e-books on the following topics and they will be instantly sent to you, when you place your order.  You’ll receive tips you can use right away and the information is very affordable at less than $10 per e-book.

If, from now on, you want to:

1  Serve people better

The secret to improved customer service is more focused dialog with the customer.  Unfortunately, auto-responders, Web site forms, reduced staffing and a faster speed of life tend to reduce the amount of focused dialog . . .

2  Be a more effective leader

Freud–and Aristotle before him–noted that two things motivate most humans.  Effective leaders know how to leverage what Freud called the Pain/Pleasure Principle.  I’m referring to the anticipation of pleasure (which isn’t usually  money) and the avoidance of pain . . .

3  Manage time better

Time, of course, is a limited commodity, but almost all of us can manage time by using systems.  A system, for example, will keep you from losing things, which ultimately saves time . . .

4  Cope with stress

Let’s be clear–stress is not natural.  Sure, there’s good such a thing as good stress, but it is not normal to always be edgy.  Many people are surprised to learn that stress is actually a choice–or more likely, a series of choices . . .

5  Deal with difficult people

I teach how to deal with a dozen types of difficult people.  The first step in dealing with them is to realize that the resulting conflict is because of you, not because of them.  With a couple of easy techniques, your situation can be much better . . .

6  Give better presentatations

One of the easiest ways to become a better presenter is to deliver a unique message.  A simple way to be different than other speakers is to not use PowerPoint.  If you must use a projector, only use it during the middle third of your program because  . . .

7  Negotiate to win

The best negotiations result in both parties wanting to do business again, but the Survivor mentality of modern businesspeople usually a conquer and destroy mentality . . .

8  Start a business

There’s never been a better time to start a business.  Digital products cost practically nothing to produce.  Marketing programs are as inexpensive as ever, thanks to the clever use of social media and video marketing . . .

9  Become known as an industry expert

There are two ways to become an industry expert FAST.  The first is to become known as a speaker in your area of expertise.  The second method is to become a published author.  Self-publishing makes this much easier than you think . . .

As always, you will be completely satisfied with my info products or I will make things right.

The new “Entrepreneur Boot Camp” series is my best work, yet

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

Composed at 30,000 feet, en route from Detroit to Minneapolis-

Almost everyone is really good at something.  Your expertise is certainly of value to you and it probably has value to others.  Many people would gladly pay you for your advice, counsel or service, if they knew it was available to them.

People would give you money for an e-book, a teleseminar or other information product—if only you had a delivery system to make these resources available to them.

A delivery system allows you to put your product, service or valuable information in the hands of others and allows you to collect a fair price for your offering.

If you've ever said something like, "I should write a book" or "I'd like to start my own business" or "I wish I had a little more money," read on.

Fla4 cover for web crppd 0309 I'm pleased to announce the completion of my newest information product.  It's the final FastLearnerAudio program in the series and I'm very excited about the topic.

This unusual information product is called Entreprenuer Boot Camp.  It's one of the best things I've ever done and you're going to love it.  You'll receive four one-hour audio programs on CD so you can listen anywhere and four 30-page e-books on the following topics:

CD1:  Become an Industry Expert   I'll show you how to get compensated for your expertise.  (It's okay if your true passion is not related to your job.)  If you have an employer, he or she will be delighted that you are interested in raising your industry profile.  As you know, experts often become rainmakers for their companies.  One sure-fire way to become an industry expert is to publish an e-book or make a video recording of a short presentation.

CD2:  How to Create Information Products     I'm teaching everyone to create information products such as e-books, audio programs and other deliverables.  A popular e-book series can be your new 401k and help you feel better about money lost in the stock market.  Imagine people purchasing your info product online and sending money right to your bank account!  I'll show you how.

CD3:  The Art and Science of Self-Promotion   Believing in yourself is critical to any success, but this can be a challenging task.  Convincing others to believe in you is even more challenging.  There are strategies that will help.  You can double your speed of success with my proven techniques for self-promotion.  I'll show you the words to use, how to use them and will even share ideas for automating this magic.

CD4:  The Lifestyle of a Speaker/Author   In any business endeavor, it helps to know where you're going.  This program will explain everything you need to know about how my business works and what you can expect from your newfound success.  Speaking and writing is a terrific way to help people!

The Entreprenuer Boot Camp program is practical, easy to use and affordable.  In fact, if you are actively pursuing your business on any level, this info product will pay for itself within 90 days.  I'll give your money back, if you're not completely satisfied.

Every day can be independence day

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

Posted from Ft. Smith, Arkansas-

Profile, blue pinstripe 2008 crppd I’m excited to be in Arkansas to keynote a conference on leadership.

I’m lucky because audience members have always been interested in my message and what I do as an information marketer.

Lately, however, that curiosity is more of an aggressive interest.

That’s because more and more, people are being asked to take care of themselves.

This persistent request is redefining relationships all over the fruited plain and encouraging all of us to become more independent.

Banks say, “We’re limiting your credit.”  Employers say, “We can no longer match your 401k” and “pay for your own dental insurance.”

This is not an economy problem or a money problem or even a job problem.  It’s a relationship problem.  There are four basic types of relationships:  dependence, co-dependence, interdependence, and independence.

The four types of relationships

If you need your boss more than she needs you, it may be in a dependency relationship.  A person usually becomes painfully aware of dependency status when he gets laid off, when the economy slumps, and during periods of high employment.

A co-dependent relationship is even more precarious.  In this situation, you and your employer need each other to succeed.  This reduces the risk of being let go, but it can be a new kind of trap because you can’t leave.

A relationship of interdependency is healthy, but can be difficult to attain and balance over the long term since the dynamics of this kind of relationship can be complicated and involved.

Finally, many people find independence to be extremely rewarding.  Think “financial independence” or the concept of being self-employed.  By the way, being your own boss is not for everybody.

A good balance for most people is having an interdependent relationship with an employer and some sort of independent, supplementary income to make life a little more rewarding and fun.

Passive income is a step toward independence

Almost everyone has knowledge worth selling.  By creating and marketing information products, such as books and audio programs, you can easily become a bit more independent, financially and otherwise.

Best of all, you don’t need to quit your job to enjoy extra benefits.

Create Sell Info Products Michael Angelo Caruso blogLearn more from my How to Create Information Products audio program, which covers how to create passive income by being a speaker or author.

This CD and 30-page e-book will help you achieve a terrific relationship with yourself.  After all, every day is independence day.

Why Frank Sinatra was bigger than Sammy Davis, Jr.

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

Altovise Davis passed away from stroke recently at age 65.  By most accounts her life had fallen apart since her husband, Sammy Davis, Jr. died.  Hopefully she has finally found peace.

I recently read, Deconstructing Sammy, the story of how Sammy Davis, Jr., one of the greatest entertainers of his time.  Sammy died $7 million in debt.

This is the famous dancer, actor and Grammy award-winning singer, who recorded Old Black Magic, I Gotta Be Me and perhaps most famously, The Candy Man.

Sammy was a talented impressionist, a good singer, a funny comedian, and a gifted dancer.  Many people think he was far more talented than Frank Sinatra.

So why did Sinatra have a better career?

Sammy Davis Jr It’s true that Davis made bad decisions and hung around with some unsavory characters, but then again, so did Frank.

It’s also true that African Americans of that time were still being subjected to blatant forms of racism and inequality.

But, according to the author, Matt Birkbeck, the entertainer’s biggest mistake was not negotiating to own his own master recordings.

Artists who own their own masters usually enjoy much higher residual or passive income.

Sammy Davis, Jr. grossed over $50 million over a six-decade career, but by age 50, the bulk of his income was derived from live performances.

For almost all of his life, Sammy would have to work–that is, physically put in time–in order to get paid.

By contrast, Frank Sinatra, whose career also lasted 60 years, signed contracts that called for ownership of the masters to revert back to Old Blue Eyes.

Frank even owned his own record label, Reprise.  And guess who was under contract to that label?  That’s right, Sammy Davis, Jr.

Davis practiced the old work model:  work once, get paid once.  Frank found a way to work once and get paid over and over again.

Be like Frank

michael angelo caruso info products industry expertEveryone reading this message has an opportunity to practice the newer work model.  It’s easier than ever to work once an get paid over and over.

The easiest way to do this is to become a recognized expert in your area of expertise.  Do this by writing articles and giving presentations.

To get paid over and over for the same work, all you have to do is create an information product that helps people. An info product is a book, an e-book, a podcast or audio program or even a video.

Article Marketing–Your Shortcut to Success

Saturday, January 3rd, 2009

One of the best ways to build your brand is completely free to you.

Most businesses look to leverage every type of effective marketing strategy, yet they consistently overlook a useful and affordable technique known as “article marketing.”

Almost every company employs at least one industry expert.  This person can almost always produce one or two short articles on a topic of interest.  Publish the articles in trade publications that crave good content and Web sites.  Give industry-related companies permission to reprint articles at no charge.

Article marketing will brand you or your co-worker as an “industry expert,” which shortens your selling cycle and will attract more business faster.

Uses for the articles:

- Post them at http://www.EzineArticles.com and similar sites; note my “expert status” on EzineArticles and model my success
– Post them on your site
– Print and give them away to potential clients to build rapport and trust
– Allow industry-related companies reprint your articles in newsletters and on Web sites
– Re-purpose the content in your blog and in Facebook notes
– Let them accumulate so you can publish an e-book or p-book

It’s easier to do this than you might think.  Work with an experienced copywriter or editor to streamline the process.  I work with Paula Parisot and others.  Focus on only one article at a time.  Ideal article length is 400 to 500 words.

Get more info on how to build your brand from the How to Create Info Products audio CD and my interview with soccer Mom turned blogger, Paula Parisot.

Best of luck!
