Content is king, email is queen, TV is an Ace

Friday, May 31st, 2013

Facebook can be a good way to get the word out, but it’s just one tool in your tool belt.

Use this social media platform to drive traffic to a website that really means something to you, such as your blog or website.  Of course, it’s not that you post on Facebook, it’s what you post on Facebook.

Video—particularly video that is uploaded to Facebook–will get you a lot of attention.

Of course, that same video can be posted to Linkedin, Twitter, Google+, and so on.

That’s why we say …

“Content is King”

king of diamonds michael angelo caruso marketingWhen you share useful content related to your expertise, like-minded people will gravitate toward you, allowing you the opportunity to convert them to customers.

Of course, the magic is in the details of what you post, when you post, how often, etc.

But Facebook makes it difficult to do business on their platform for free.  Currently, they make sure that only about 16% of the people who Like your Facebook Business (Fan) Page can even see your quote.  This can be discouraging.

That’s why we say that if Content is King, then …

“Email is Queen”

infusionsoft logo crm marketing e-commerce michael angelo carusoFacebook relationships are considered casual and decidedly non-business oriented.

But the people on your email list have almost always opted in, which means they are presumably quite interested in your goods and services.

It’s true that a measly open rate of 14% is considered excellent when it comes to email.  Remember that Facebook allows 16% of your business connections to see your posts.  Coincidence?  I think not.

I use Infusionsoft for my Customer Relationship Manager (CRM) and make money every time I send out email.

That’s why we say that if Email is Queen, then …

“Broadcast television is an Ace”

Ferris Bueller michael angelo carusoTrue, Nielsen has bemoaned the effectiveness of television for quite some time, but something about being on TV really gets peoples’ attention.

To quote my favorite philosopher, Ferris Beuller, “If you have the means, I highly recommend it.”

If you don’t have the means to buy airtime, then make yourself available for interviews so that you can sell by proxy.

And once you have the video file of that television appearance, you can re-purpose it on Facebook and your other platforms.  And the marketing cycle repeats.

I just love it when things work out.

Video makes using the phone fun, again!

Friday, June 1st, 2012

Telephone calls are so old-school.

Everyone’s talking about how nobody answers their phones anymore and how people would rather text than make a call.  But they aren’t discussing this on the phone.

What is this romance with texting?  Some people text me to request that I call them.  Um, why not just call me?

While land lines have been disconnected all across the fruited plain, recent technological developments have made video–to steal Ma Bell’s old long-distance advertising slogan–”the next best thing to being there.”

Skype and various webinar platforms have “webolutionized” communication and are fast making phone calls so … yesterday.  My Skype name is: michaelcaruso4

Emily Hay skype interview michael angelo caruso Here’s one of my early Skype calls; a recorded interview I did with the great Emily Hay.  Our topic is how to use “image marketing” via social media.

Emily is one of the leading social media experts in Michigan and I like her style.

Now, Google+ Hangout is on the scene and the party has really begun.  Video is adds a refreshing component to what might normally be a drab telephone connection.

Video communication is really fun!

I’ve been having a blast with a video through a Google+ feature called “Hangout.” It’s sleek, simple, and fun.

Here are the easy steps for doing your first video chat via Google+ Hangout

1.    Get a free Google account, including a gmail address.
2.    Go to http://www.google.com/tools/dlpage/res/talkvideo/hangouts/ and download the free plug-in.
3.    Watch the one-minute demo video.
4.    Go https://plus.google.com/ and start a profile
5.    To participate in a video chat just pull up Google+ and click “Start a hangout” in the upper right corner.

The above set-up process should take about ten minutes total and you only have to do it once.

After you’re set-up, just click the Hangout button and invite whomever you’d like to the call.

Find me on Google+ and we’ll Hangout!

Why Google+ is better than Facebook

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

Internet marketer, Michael Angelo Caruso, gives social media training. If you’ve ever complained that Facebook takes too much time or isn’t a high even return-on investment, I have good news and bad news.

The good news is that Google+ is in many ways a better platform.  The bad news is that you want another social media account like you want another hole in your head.

But there are compelling reasons to get involved with G+ right away.

Let’s get this party started

Google is a rockin’ search engine, so it owns the playing field.  If we were all still kids, Google would own the playing field, the parking lot, the ball, and the air.

So, Google makes sure that G+ integrates across a number of Google products, including Google Buzz and Google Profiles.

Try this experiment.  If you have a fairly distinct name and you type it into Google, your Facebook page will probably rank fairly high.  But, if you have a Google profile, it will rank higher than your Facebook page.

Oh, and you probably have a Google profile even if you haven’t created one.  Why?  Because Google created one for you if you have a Gmail account.  When I discovered my unadorned Google profile a while back, it ranked higher than the Facebook that had been established for years!

Started in June 2011 as a test version, its popularity has grown by leaps and bounds. Google+ notices are posted inside users’ Gmail inbox, so it’s 100% real-time Gmail deliverability.

When you write about a subject on Google+ and your circle friends Google that subject, your comments and links are displayed automatically on page one of Google. No back-linking, no on-site optimization, just free traffic!

Still not convinced to use Google+?

Bill Douglass (bill@wsiwebsalesnow.com), a marketing expert at WSI Web Sales Now, has written about Google+’s interesting features and benefits:

•    A focus on targeted sharing within subsets of a social group (or what Google calls ‘Circles’).

•    A section specifically for viewing, managing and editing multimedia. Google+ includes an image editor, privacy options and sharing features.

•    ’Hangouts’ is becoming very popular. Instead of directly asking a friend to join a group chat, users instead click ‘start a hangout’ and they’re instantly in a video chat-room alone. At the same time, a message goes out to their social circles, letting them know that their friend is ‘hanging out’ and that they are invited to join.

Google+ is a terrific for Internet marketing

Google+ 100KB Michael Angelo Caruso blogJust like with Facebook, you can create a business page after you create a personal profile page.  Businesses are beginning to see the value of Google+ with the new Pages feature.

The new Google+ brand Pages look similar to Google+ Profiles, except for the little square icon that indicates that it’s a Page rather than a Profile.

Users can add brands to their circles, check out their information, and browse their photos. When users add a brand to their circles, it helps increase that brand’s follower count.

Here’s what you need to know about starting a business page on Google+:

•    Before you can create a Google+ Page for your business, you need a Google+ Profile. The ‘You+’ link on your Gmail dashboard will direct you to the Profile creation page.

•    Choose a category to begin. Local businesses is good for smaller, less well-known businesses. Product or brand would work for companies and larger known businesses. Company, institution, or organization is mainly for businesses that don’t directly sell something, mostly not-for-profits.

•    Personalize your page with a photo/logo and tagline. You can continue with an introduction, information, and contact information, and finish with a photo strip of five different photos.

•    For your business Page, you can create circles (networks), start posting information and news through your feed. You can also add your Google+ Page details to your existing website and share it via other networks.

Google+ is a lot of fun, too!

If you have your own website or online business, an efficient social profile Page using  Google+ will let you explore a whole new world of social media marketing, that is not only fun, but easy and profitable.

•    Google+ posts sent to “public” rank fairly well in Google search results. Merging Google properties into Google+ and integrating it with the search engines has a tremendous impact on where your company appears in search engine results pages (SERPs).

•    You can manage circles-distribute clients into specific categories and share different posts, news or deals with different circles accordingly. This is a great way to connect with fans and share information with clients.

•    ”Hangouts” is another great way to engage your customers and colleagues. It’s a high quality video chat that allows you to interact with your fans face to face. This interaction will allow you to get to know them, answer questions as well as get live product/service feedback. Businesses can also use “Hangouts” for video conferencing, to push live events and seminars to customers.

•    Use the Google+ badge to promote your site and your Google+ page. Google+ badge links your website with your Google+ page and lets others know you’re here. When a visitor likes your site and clicks the icon they will be taken directly to your Google+ page and will be able to share and follow your posts.

•    Google+ Direct allows people to simply enter a ‘+’ before your company name when searching on Google and get directly to your Google+ page.

•    The +1 button on Google+ is an ideal way to have customers spread the word about your business and its presence on Google+.  You can also connect your +1′s from your website to your +1′s on your Google+ page. People tend to trust recommendations from people they already know.

•    ”Ripples” is a Google+ tool that allows you to watch your posts and information as they travel across social networks.  You can easily determine who is sharing your content and who is paying attention to it.

•    With “analytics,” you can get information about your page’s followers, visitors, and the general traffic and social activity around your business.

Google+ is a game-changer

Google+ for business is unique in that it has blurred the lines between personal social networks such as Facebook, and business networks like LinkedIn.

Linkedin, by the way, has long been associated as one of the “Big Three” social media platforms.  As of last week, Infusionsoft (my CRM and a major player in the industry) announced that it’s social media integration will include a new Big Three:  Facebook, Twitter, and Google+.  Linkedin is being left out of the picture, at least for now.

I’m making Google+ an important part of my Internet marketing activity.  See you there!

Top 10 Excuses For Not Being Great
from www.MichaelAngeloCaruso.com

Michael Angelo Caruso and Oscar blog greatEveryone has the ability to be great.  In fact, greatness is probably the most natural of all achievements.  So why don’t more of us achieve greatness?  One reason is that we get in our own way.  Another reason is that we often don’t receive the right amount of encouragement.

By the way, there are varying degrees of greatness.  You may never win an Oscar, for example, but you may get to hold one.  :-)

Here are the top ten excuses for not being great, along with some quick  advice on how you can achieve greatness.

Top 10 excuses for not being great

1. You don’t know how.

Huh? You’re kidding, right? You don’t know how to do something? I have one word for you: Google.

Need a book? Your public library has thousands and you won’t have to wait in line because nobody goes there.

Need tutelage? Hire a coach.

Information is more accessible now than any other point in history and most of it is free. Get good at accessing what you need to know. It’s your ticket to greatness.

2. You don’t know the right people.

As with information, people are more accessible than ever before. Nearly anyone you need to know can be found on Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin or YouTube.

Make yourself a little more available and you’re half way there.

The average person actually stops trying to be likable as he or she gets older. Most people on Facebook sign up about 145 friends and stop. Become a bit more psychologically attractive and you will connect with the right people.

3. You don’t have the money.

Dollar sign Michael Angelo Caruso blogThis is a math problem everyone can solve. There are two major ways that you can have more money.

The first way is to reduce expenses and save the extra money for whatever you’d like or need. Create a strict budget, and set aside a portion of your income. This may include sacrificing, a lost art among a society that strongly identifies with comfort.

The second way to have more money is to earn more. See “comfort” above. You can earn more by getting a better paying job, also known as “leaving your comfort zone.” Earning more often means working harder or at least applying yourself.

Would you like to double the amount of money you earn now? Get a second job! If you really want the money, you’ll do it.

One of the easiest ways to earn money is to proffer your intellectual property. You can do this by creating a short e-book that offers information on how to do something. You’re probably really good at something, right?

Tell others how to do it in a Word document, save the document to a .pdf that you can sell online and off. Sell ten e-books at $10 each and you’ll have an extra $100.

It doesn’t matter who you are, where you live or what the economical climate is like. Money is all around you. Go get it.

4. Someone else is already doing it.

Which came first, Copyblogger or Problogger? Groupon or Living Social? Dyson or Hoover? Yahoo or Hotmail?

You don’t know? Very few will people will care if you’re not first to market as long as your offering has a unique and worthwhile value.

A guy named Elisha Gray filed for a patent on a new invention called the telephone three hours after Alexander Graham Bell.

Count on it. Someone, somewhere is already doing what you’re doing. Work around them.

5. You’ll get to it later.

Maybe you’ll be great later. But history teaches us that life introduces all sorts of distractions in the game of life.

Face it, you’re only going to get busier.

Now is the time to put “greatness” on your calendar. Schedule it, then accomplish it. It’s called “greatness” partly because it’ll make you feel great!

6. You’re not ready for that level of success.

Success is a head game of sorts.

You’re trying to achieve something new, so how do you ever really know if you’re ready? What does “ready” even mean?

Stop making excuses and realize you’ll like life better when you’re in a better place.

Oh, you’re ready, trust me. And if greatness occurs and you’re not ready, you’ll get ready in a hurry.

7. There are too many obstacles.

This is true, but it’s not a good excuse for dodging greatness.

Heroes do things that others are unwilling or unable to do.

To find the treasure, you must be born into misfortune, get beat up by bad guys, be betrayed by your best friend, find love and lose it, and have a really bad accident.

And then, after you’re totally exhausted, you get to slay a dragon.

Hey, if being a hero was easy, everyone would do it.

8. You don’t have a (good) website.

A killer website is always useful for success and greatness. But if you don’t have one, you have options. If your current crappy website needs a redesign, hire someone to redesign it.

Meanwhile, you can promote, brand, and even sell from a free blog site. Post on other people’s blogs, but never promote yourself without permission. There are clever ways to sell on social media platforms.

Many people make money from affiliate marketing, which allows revenue to flow to you after you recommend products and services to your distribution list.

Website, schmebsite.

9. You’re too tired.

Being tired all the time is not normal.

Good health is important and certainly makes it easier to be great. Sufficient rest is part of good health. Go to bed earlier, if necessary, but establish a working rhythm that feels like success.

10. You’re just not confident enough.

There are two ways a human being comes into intelligence: genetic predisposition and learned behavior. Confidence is a learned behavior.

Listen to self-help programs and motivational messages. These total strangers will say things to you that your loved ones will not. It sounds implausible, but if you listen often enough to the right people, you will begin to believe there is greatness in you. And you know what? There is!

The second most important web site for your business

Sunday, June 19th, 2011

Internet marketers and business owners always ask me where they should be putting their marketing efforts.  Of course, your company Web site is a critical place for you to spend time and money.

But what’s the second most important Web site for your business?  I’ll give you a hint.

It’s not Linkedin.  And it’s not your Linkedin business page, although you should have one.

It’s not your Facebook page.  And it’s not your Facebook business page.  You should have one of those, too.

The second most important Web site for your business is not YouTube.

It’s not even Google.

These are all valuable sites for marketing your products and services, but the one site that should be a part of every online business in 2009 is …

Twitter.

Here’s why in one sentence–Google crawls individual Tweets.

You can post Facebook status updates all day and night, but Google will not see them.  The same is true for your Linkedin status updates.

But, Google indexes your individual messages on Twitter and makes them available to people doing Web searches forever.  Of course, you’ll be putting key words in your Tweets, but imagine what will happen when you’re putting your Web site address (or an abbreviated version of it) in 80% of your Tweets.

This is probably hard to imagine because Facebook and Linkedin don’t work like this.  Twitter is more powerful than Facebook and Linkedin combined!

That’s why, if you aren’t using Twitter, you are missing out on the greatest opportunity for building relationships with your customers and prospects.  You are missing out on the best free branding tool on the web.

And you are missing out on huge amounts of free traffic and increased sales!

There’s just no excuse for any business, large or small, to not be using Twitter, which has improved my reach immensely.  I’m on Twitter at @MichaelACaruso

The best keyword is “research”

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Search has become a very important business tool.

Businesses all over the fruited plain are constantly trying to figure out the best keyword to use on their Web sites.

The best keyword for all of us, it turns out, is “research.”

Brother Dave on left

And search engine optimization (SEO), despite its complicated moniker, offers some very simple marketing lessons.  I’m reminded of something my brother Dave Caruso taught me a while back when we were trying to improve the effectiveness of my Web site.

My site has always had a number of products and programs related to “self improvement.”

Dave, a great linear thinker and fantastic “systems” guy, did a few quick Google searches to compare how often people search “self help” vs. “self improvement.”

He found that the following variations gave these totals (results in millions):

Keyword search # of hits
self-help                             89,700
self help                                 89, 600
self improvement              30,200
self-improvement             21,200

This was HUGE and I immediately wanted to change my site to take advantage of this discovery.

Then, Dave checked the number of hits for one more term:  “personal improvement.”  At the time, those key words showed 124,000,000–far more than the other key word phrases!

“Personal improvement” was the keyword phrase to optimize.  Thanks, brother!

When doing SEO, make sure you do research to discover which key words and phrases will rank highly.  You may be surprised!

Keyword research helps people find me, even if I’m in Royal Oak, Michigan.  Which, um, I am.      – Michael Angelo Caruso, Motivational speaker, Internet student

Remember the 80/20 rule on social media?

You may be tempted to sell to your social media connections.

Direct selling is considered bad form on social media,  so I recommend following the 80/20 rule which is, four value-added posts for every post that tries to sell.  In other words, share info, an inspirational quotation, a fun photo, or a useful article in four of every five posts.  Make these posts indirectly related to your product or service.

I call this “indirect selling.”

How to rework content for your blog

Sunday, January 30th, 2011

Blogging articlesWhen posting an article to your blog or creating other content for your company’s Internet presence, it’s best to do your own writing.

But, if your writing skills aren’t the best, you can also rework articles that have already been published.  When doing so, make every effort to avoid two things:

1) Plagiarism, which is unethical. It’s just plain wrong to use claim credit for someone else’s work.  This includes the despicable act of  anonymously posting articles–as if the pieces wrote themselves!

2)  Duplicate content. Google and other search engines notice when you post duplicate content and will penalize you with lower search rankings.

Here are some guidelines for reworking articles written by others.

Be sure to change the other writer’s article at least 70%.  You can do this by rearranging the paragraphs and sentences and changing the order of the bullet points.  Delete some of the material and maybe add a bit of your own.  You can also incorporate content from two or three sources.

Perhaps the best way to go about reworking an article is to put the words in your own voice.  For example, don’t keep words you would never use in conversation.

A second way to rewrite is to simply delete awkward phrasing, sentence fragments, convoluted sentences, and other nonsense.  Most people tend to overwrite, so it will be easier to make your revised article shorter, just by
taking out the weakest parts.

Speaking of length, you only need about 500 words for a substantial blog post.  I recently rewrote a cool article I found online, by using all the above techniques and busting the article into four blog posts.

When finished, include your favorite keywords in three places: the title, first paragraph and last paragraph before posting.

Be sure to add your contact information and attribution for the writer–you, if you followed these directions and when rewriting content.

Have a Linkedin business page, yet?

Saturday, January 29th, 2011

Linkedin logoReaders always write . .  .

Here’s a great Linkedin question from  a clever guy who’s figured out how to put his business phone number into his “Name” field.  Very smart!

Michael,

Great presentation on Jan 14 in Macomb County!

Question: Even though Google doesn’t crawl LinkedIn, does a corporate website listed on a LinkedIn page still count toward adding external links to a site?

Dan Wolan, Director of Sales, Productions Plus – The Talent Shop

Dear Dan,

Hi, Dan and thanks for your kind compliment about my social media class.

Your personal LI page ranks on Google when you search your name and it will recognize your business page, as well.

However, Google does not crawl DEEP into Linkedin (LI) or, for that matter, Facebook.

Google, for example, may recognize the TITLE of the .pdf you post on Linkedin, but not the content.

Think of religion, as a metaphor.  People believe in God, but not enough to go to church every Sunday.  :-)

Class has ended, go in peace.

P.S.  Do you have a business page on Linkedin, yet?

One blog or two?

Michael Angelo Caruso gives blogging advice.Readers always write . . .

Hi, Michael,

I was wondering if I could ask you a quick question regarding Social Media. My boss has two blogs and we repeat the same content on both of them. Should I just delete the “Blogger” and keep the “WordPress?” I know Google does not like duplicate content.

Thanks,
Blogging for Success

Dear B.S. –

Always do what works.  Sounds like you’re not getting much results from Blogger, hence your intuitive idea to abandon Blogger.

Sounds like you’re maintaining two blogs and neither are getting much attention, so I recommend isolating your blog activity to the superior WordPress platform.

You are correct about Google’s contempt for duplicate content, which makes me wonder why you’re doing it.  By the way, you can post the same topic to two separate blogs, just be sure you rewrite the content and be diligent about changing the first sentence, the last sentence and the blog title.

Here’s a way to get more attention from your blog.

Isolate some 140-character quotable quotes from a blog post and include a tiny URL of the original post.  Then, post the phrase as a status update on your social media pages.  This is a great way to tease your social media contacts into visiting the blog.

Also, according to @Scott Brills, my trusted Web guy.  Google does not currently crawl Facebook Note pages, so you can post the blog content there without rewriting it.

You’re welcome.

See you online or in real life,
Michael
