My social media links

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

facebook, linkedin, twitter, youtube icons Michael Angelo Caruso social mediaSocial media has become a monster way to build networks, promote products and services, and build an impressive Internet presence.

Just think what happens to your online profile when in addition to a Website and a blog, you have an account with Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, Google+ and others.  (My links are below.)

To see how this works for people like me, simply type my full name into your favorite search engine.  See how I own the first ten pages of Google, for example?  Pretty cool!  You can do the same if you spend a little time and energy on social media networking.

Here are links to my favorite social media networks.  Simply click on the link to friend, follow or connect with me.  If we’re already connected, feel free to post “hello,” a compliment or whatever’s on your mind.

I’m big on Linkedin, Twitter, YouTube, Google+, and Facebook.  To connect with me on any or all these platforms, simply type “Michael Angelo Caruso” in the respective search box.

Okay, so I’ve given you my social media links.  Feel free to leave yours in the comments section.  What is your favorite social media platform?

If you have a social media following, you may want to share information about what you do to these folks.  Direct selling is considered bad form on Facebook, for example, so you may want to use a technique I invented called, “indirect selling.”  To learn more, listen to my Social Marketing for Business CDs.

3 tricks for repurposing content

Sunday, April 10th, 2011

I generate a ton of content!

Michael Angelo Caruso's info productsYou may know that I produce a bi-monthly newsletter, post three blogs a week, and maintain multiple accounts on Linkedin, Facebook, and Twitter.

I also conduct monthly teleseminars, post tons of video on my YouTube and Vimeo channels and have created over 75 information products.

People often ask me how I get it all done.  Sometimes I wonder, too!

My favorite magic trick

One of my “tricks” involves repurposing content.  It’s a useful technique for anyone who works as a leader or supervisor, salesperson, customer service rep or whatever.

When you repurpose your great content, your information becomes accessible to more people in more convenient ways.  When your relevant content shows up in multiple places, YOU become more familiar, and people start thinking of you as an industry expert.  Pretty cool!

Do you ever give presentations?  Here are three easy ways to make your talk available in different modalities:

1) Record your live presentation with a digital recorder like those sold at Radio Shack. Then, import the sound file to a free audio editing program such as “Audacity” and burn audio CDs to giveaway or sell.

2) Record a three-minute highlight of your speech with a Flip video camera and post the clip on YouTube. Be sure to display your Web site on the “bottom third” of the screen to drive traffic to your Web site.

3) Publish an e-book version of your speech. Use voice recognition software to create a transcript or keystroke the speech into a Word doc (if you use a PC) and convert the document into a .pdf.

Oh, and congratulations! When you do #3, you’ll officially be a published author!

Churn out your own info products

For dozens of more tips on this subject and to generate a passive revenue stream for yourself, listen to my 60-minute audio CD, How to Create Info Products.  It comes with a 30-page e-book, too!

Thanks for your interest in self-improvement.  Now go repurpose some of your great content!

Return on involvement

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

Most people think of ROI as “return-on-investment,” but thanks to my friend Jerry Van Rossum, I now think of ROI as “return-on-involvement.”

In other words, you get what you give.

This is true for many things in life including love, service clubs such as Rotary and the Optimists, and Facebook activity, too.

Even traditional relationships such as friendships and marriages blossom with a return-on-involvement arrangement.

Loads of research suggests that the best parents make sure to spend quality time with their children.  They know the importance of not being “absent” guardians.

Good salespeople are aware that it’s critical to be involved with the customers concerns and issues rather than make a habit of “drive-by” visits.

A story explains it best

There’s an old chestnut about a window salesman who had finally been asked to leave his low-rent territory to call on the owner of the biggest mansion in town.

The salesman was practically giddy as he pulled into the mansion’s circular drive.  This was going to be the biggest sale of his career!  Why the commission from this sale would be more money than he made the entire first half of the year!

The seller was so focused on his return-on-investment–how much he would be compensated for the time he spent selling his services, that he forgot to focus on return-on-involvement–that if he simply engaged the prospect and gave him the right kind of attention, things would work out for both parties.

It’s okay to pursue an ROI, as long as you don’t forget to be involved.

Resume tip–your resume doesn’t matter

Sunday, March 6th, 2011

Readers always write…

Hi, Michael-

I’ve recently had to update my resume so I can upgrade my job.  I consider myself a good writer, but it’s been quite a challenge getting this project done.  I’m still not happy with my resume and wondering if you have any tips for me.  I’ve attached a copy to this e-mail message.  Thank you!

Sara in Bloomington, Illinois

Hi, Sara-

A lot of the best jobs are filled without using the resume process.  The best way to get a good job is through networking, which allows you to become recommended or “pre-approved” by a trusted third-party.  More info on how to do this in a future post.

So now that I’ve told you that a resume doesn’t matter, let me explain how you can make yours better…

Your resume looks very good, Sara!  I’m returning it to you with a few minor suggestions for improved grammar and syntax.  I am also listing my advice on how to “punch up” a resume.

Tips:

-  All the experts recommend a one-page resume
-  Play down past jobs (use one or two lines max for each)
-  Use present tense for present situation, e.g. “demonstrated” should be “demonstrates”
-  Use parallel construction for bullet points; begin each bullet with an active verb

Bonus ideas

Here are a couple of special “Michael techniques:”

/Recycle the exact language from the job posting.

/That way, your resume is more likely to make you look like the perfect fit.

/The resume is a kind of meaningless tradition.  It’s far better to secure the job first and then submit the resume as a required formality.

/So, how does one get the job before submitting the resume?  Use online research tools such as Linkedin and Google to learn more about the company.   Of course, you should visit the company’s Web site, but learn even more about the specific people involved such as:

-  Who will be interviewing you?
-  Who will you be working with?
-  Who will be your boss?
-  Who is your potential boss’s boss?
-  What can be learned from their social media or YouTube activities?

Once you have the names of these individuals, search them online to discover anything you can, such as:

-  Where they live?
-  What church do they attend?
-  Do they blog?
-  What they’ve presented on (presentation pdfs often come up in this type of search)

The idea is to get into the same orbit of one or more of these people so they can get to know you and possibly champion your cause.

Caveat:  Don’t be aggressive or even assertive when doing this.  A sincere compliment when friending someone on Facebook will usually do the trick.  You might contact the person to offer insightful research on one of their
favorite topics.  Don’t necessarily make it known that you are applying for a job.

When you show interest in others, others show interest in you.     -Michael Angelo Caruso, American author and speaker, (1958-present –ha!)

Then, when the moment is right, say something like, “Oh, by the way, the reason for my interest in xxxxx is that I’m thinking of applying for the xxxxx position.”

You’re on your way to a some useful information, an endorsement, a champion, and hopefully, a new job!

Good luck!

Facebook is not Internet marketing

Sunday, February 20th, 2011

Michael Angelo Caruso Internet marketing facebook, linked, twitter, social mediaSo you’re spending hours on Facebook (FB) building a “brand” so you can earn “extra revenue” that will allow you to “retire.”

Let’s be serious.

If you’re marketing on Facebook but not on Twitter (TW), you’re wasting your time.  Why?  Because the Internet works in the aggregate, that’s why.

A healthy Facebook following means little compared to a healthy following on the Big Three social media platforms–FB, TW, and Linkedin (LI), with a YouTube presence added to the mix.

Each of these platforms offers something special to the branding process, more colors, if you will.  You wouldn’t fill your wardrobe with only navy blue shirts and pants, would you?

Twitter, for example, is more important than Facebook and Linkedin combined, for example, because search engines such as Google crawl individual tweets.  This is extremely important to driving traffic to your Web site!

Essentially, we’re talking about doing things that drive traffic to your Web site and money to your bank account.  This is done by systematically developing your brand using important, albeit inexpensive web online platforms, so beware of “social media experts”  who only want to help you with Facebook because “that’s all you need.”

Here are two training options that I offer clients–

What if these are the best of times?

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

airplaneOrlando and other hot spots are in high season and spring break will be here before you know it.

The travel season generates lots of negative publicity about how bad the travel industry treats us.

Older folks wistfully comment about the “good old days” when airlines treated customers better and travel wasn’t such a hassle.

But, what if these are the good old days?

Objective research indicates that what we’re experiencing now are the best of times, at least when compared to how things used to be.

Flying, for example has never been easier or more affordable, according to a recent USA Today article by John Waggoner.

Although the airline industry has made many improvements through the years, the big change was when the government deregulated the industry in 1978, which opened up competition.

Here are the facts about how much better things are compared to the “good old days:”

- In 1978, fliers paid about 27.9 cents a mile; they pay an average of 12.1 cents for each mile flown today.

- Until the 1970′s seat assignments were not available in advance.

- Flight attendants may have worn white gloves back in the day, but it used to take 14 hours and multiple stops to fly from New York to Barcelona.

-The Air Transport Association reports that in the period from 1965-69, there were 39 accidents involving fatalities on scheduled commercial flights operated by U.S. airlines.  In 2005-2009, there were six.

- Airports have become min-cities, filled with amenities such as high-end shopping, massage therapists, and cuisine from all over the world.

So why do  we think things are getting worse?

Memory, the media, and something called “group think” play a role.

Our brains tend to accentuate the positive and gloss over the negative when reviewing old memories.

The media–and gossip–for that matter, thrive on bad news and the act of stirring things up.   Now social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook have become a breeding ground for complaints rather than compliments.

Finally, people like to identify with other people who have problems.  Misery loves company and all that.

Maybe things aren’t so bad for right now.  Maybe we’re just that much more efficient at complaining.

What if these are the best of times?

Have a Linkedin business page, yet?

Here’s a great Linkedin question from  a clever guy who’s figured out how to put his business phone number into his “Name” field.  Very smart!

Michael,

Great presentation on Jan 14 in Macomb County!

Question: Even though Google doesn’t crawl LinkedIn, does a corporate website listed on a LinkedIn page still count toward adding external links to a site?

Dan Wolan, Director of Sales, Productions Plus – The Talent Shop

Dear Dan,

Hi, Dan and thanks for your kind compliment about my social media class.

Your personal LI page ranks on Google when you search your name and it will recognize your business page, as well.

However, Google does not crawl DEEP into Linkedin (LI) or, for that matter, Facebook.

Google, for example, may recognize the TITLE of the .pdf you post on Linkedin, but not the content.

Think of religion, as a metaphor.  People believe in God, but not enough to go to church every Sunday.  :-)

Class has ended, go in peace.

Article marketing – selling without selling

5 Cool Ideas for Article Marketing – Selling Without Selling
From www.MichaelAngeloCaruso.com

Here’s a great way to sell without seeming like a salesperson.  It’s called “article marketing.”

Article marketing tips with Michael Angelo CarusoThe first syllable of “article” is “art” and there is an art to creating useful content.  Article marketing is certainly more time consuming than posting a status update on your Facebook business page, but the payback can be huge.

If you can write, it’s best to create original content, but here’s how you can reconstitute info from articles written by others.

Copy/paste the content from one or two well-written articles into Notepad on your PC.  You can open the Notepad program by clicking Start/Programs/Accessories.  Notepad will strip out all the hidden code.

Copy/paste the content from Notepad into a fresh Word document.   Then, start rewriting by moving paragraphs around, reversing sentence order, and doing word substitution.  You want to change about 75% of the article to make the article your own and avoid plagiarizing.

Sometimes, it’s a good idea to retain some brilliant quote or well-turned phrase from the article you have not written.  It’s okay to do this if you provide attribution by including the author’s name, title and company or location.

Finally, it’s important to identify and include your favorite key words in in the article.  Key words, of course, will help people find your article when they search the Internet.  Make sure these key words are in three places:

a)    The title of the article
b)    The first paragraph—ideally the first sentence—of the article.
c)    The last paragraph—ideally the last sentence—of the article.

Here are 5 ways to repurpose the content of your new article and get the most from your online marketing efforts:

1)    Post the article on your Web site.
2)    Post a version of the article as a Facebook Note.
3)    Use a 140 character excerpt of the article as a status update or Tweet.
4)    Post the article on a free article depot site, such as www.EzineArticle.com
5)    Create a .pdf of the article and post it on your Linkedin page.

Articles that are written in an “evergreen” format can be reposted and reshared, if they don’t contain dated information.

Article marketing is a fantastic way to sell without selling.

One blog or two?

Monday, January 17th, 2011

Michael Angelo Caruso gives blogging advice.Readers always write . . .

Hi, Michael,

I was wondering if I could ask you a quick question regarding Social Media. My boss has two blogs and we repeat the same content on both of them. Should I just delete the “Blogger” and keep the “WordPress?” I know Google does not like duplicate content.

Thanks,
Blogging for Success

Dear B.S. –

Always do what works.  Sounds like you’re not getting much results from Blogger, hence your intuitive idea to abandon Blogger.

Sounds like you’re maintaining two blogs and neither are getting much attention, so I recommend isolating your blog activity to the superior WordPress platform.

You are correct about Google’s contempt for duplicate content, which makes me wonder why you’re doing it.  By the way, you can post the same topic to two separate blogs, just be sure you rewrite the content and be diligent about changing the first sentence, the last sentence and the blog title.

Here’s a way to get more attention from your blog.

Isolate some 140-character quotable quotes from a blog post and include a tiny URL of the original post.  Then, post the phrase as a status update on your social media pages.  This is a great way to tease your social media contacts into visiting the blog.

Also, according to @Scott Brills, my trusted Web guy.  Google does not currently crawl Facebook Note pages, so you can post the blog content there without rewriting it.

You’re welcome.

See you online or in real life,
Michael

Social media tip from Jan 14 class, tickets still available

Facebook fWe’re just into the New Year and everyone is thinking about ways to make 2011 even better than 2o1o.

Here’s a free Facebook tip to help you improve online marketing efforts, followed by a special invitation to a low-dough training event I’m doing with Russ Cuthrell on January 14, 2011.  (As of today, there are only 20 seats left!)

The Facebook tip involves your Info page.  The average FB user posts long, frequent messages on her wall, but skimps when posting content on her Info page.

She thinks that sending “salesy” messages and posts to FB friends will carry the day and often worries about putting too much “personal” information on her Info page.  This type of thinking is counter-intuitive and will harm Facebook marketing efforts.  Here’s why . . .

Facebook, like all pages on the Internet, functions on the existence of keywords.  The Info page is a terrific place to place keywords, but this only occurs, if you type long answers into the template!

Remember that FB uses the content on your Info page to connect you with like-minded people–the very same people who are likely to be interested in what you’re selling.  FB can do this best when you list your favorite quotations, music, books, location, etc.

You’re not giving up anything valuable like your social security or driver’s license number.  Facebook has over 40 privacy buttons to filter out any troublemakers.

If you are doing business, you need to be found online
