How to download photos from your iPhone

iphone michael angelo caruso blogThe remarkably intuitive iPhone is surprisingly dumb when it comes to downloading photos.

Some people chalk this up to Apple’s long history of not playing nice with the Windows operating system.

No matter.  When it’s time to move pics from your phone to your ‘puter, you’re certainly not in the mood to do research.

So, here are the steps.


How to download photos from your iPhone

1)  Connect your phone to the PC, using the USB cable provided.

2) An Apple iPhone window will appear, telling you that a “camera is connected” or something like that. Select “Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard” or “Download pictures from a camera or scanner” and click “OK.”

3) You’ll see the “Scanner and Camera Wizard.”  Click “Next.”

4) You’ll see thumbnail versions of the pics on your iPhone.  All the checked photos will be copied to the computer.  Click “Next.”

5) The next window, “Picture Name and Destination,” allows you to name the group of pictures and choose a place to save this group of picture.


A few more tips

michael angelo caruso blogIf all or most of the photos are Halloween images, you can save time labeling each individual shot by labeling the group “Halloween.”

Be sure to check the “Delete pictures from my device after copying them” box or you’ll have to delete the original iPhone photos manually, one at at a time.

Michael Angelo Caruso and Oscar blog greatEveryone has the ability to be great.  In fact, greatness is probably the most natural of all achievements.  So why don’t more of us achieve greatness?  One reason is that we get in our own way.  Another reason is that we often don’t receive the right amount of encouragement.

By the way, there are varying degrees of greatness.  You may never win an Oscar, for example, but you may get to hold one.  :-)

Here are the top ten excuses for not being great, along with some quick  advice on how you can achieve greatness.

1. You don’t know how.

Huh? You’re kidding, right? You don’t know how to do something? I have one word for you: Google.

Need a book? Your public library has thousands and you won’t have to wait in line because nobody goes there.

Need tutelage? Hire a coach.

Information is more accessible now than any other point in history and most of it is free. Get good at accessing what you need to know. It’s your ticket to greatness.


2. You don’t know the right people.

As with information, people are more accessible than ever before. Nearly anyone you need to know can be found on Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin or YouTube.

Make yourself a little more available and you’re half way there.

The average person actually stops trying to be likable as he or she gets older. Most people on Facebook sign up about 145 friends and stop. Become a bit more psychologically attractive and you will connect with the right people.


3. You don’t have the money.

The first way is to reduce expenses and save the extra money for whatever you’d like or need. Create a strict budget, and set aside a portion of your income. This may include sacrificing, a lost art among a society that strongly identifies with comfort.

The second way to have more money is to earn more. See “comfort” above. You can earn more by getting a better paying job, also known as “leaving your comfort zone.” Earning more often means working harder or at least applying yourself.

Would you like to double the amount of money you earn now? Get a second job! If you really want the money, you’ll do it.

One of the easiest ways to earn money is to proffer your intellectual property. You can do this by creating a short e-book that offers information on how to do something. You’re probably really good at something, right?

Tell others how to do it in a Word document, save the document to a .pdf that you can sell online and off. Sell ten e-books at $10 each and you’ll have an extra $100.

It doesn’t matter who you are, where you live or what the economical climate is like. Money is all around you. Go get it.


4. Someone else is already doing it.

Which came first, Copyblogger or Problogger? Groupon or Living Social? Dyson or Hoover? Yahoo or Hotmail?

You don’t know? Very few will people will care if you’re not first to market as long as your offering has a unique and worthwhile value.

A guy named Elisha Gray filed for a patent on a new invention called the telephone three hours after Alexander Graham Bell.

Count on it. Someone, somewhere is already doing what you’re doing. Work around them.


5. You’ll get to it later.

Maybe you’ll be great later. But history teaches us that life introduces all sorts of distractions in the game of life.

Face it, you’re only going to get busier.

Now is the time to put “greatness” on your calendar. Schedule it, then accomplish it. It’s called “greatness” partly because it’ll make you feel great!


6. You’re not ready for that level of success.

Success is a head game of sorts.

You’re trying to achieve something new, so how do you ever really know if you’re ready? What does “ready” even mean?

Stop making excuses and realize you’ll like life better when you’re in a better place.

Oh, you’re ready, trust me. And if greatness occurs and you’re not ready, you’ll get ready in a hurry.


7. There are too many obstacles.

This is true, but it’s not a good excuse for dodging greatness.

Heroes do things that others are unwilling or unable to do.

To find the treasure, you must be born into misfortune, get beat up by bad guys, be betrayed by your best friend, find love and lose it, and have a really bad accident.

And then, after you’re totally exhausted, you get to slay a dragon.

Hey, if being a hero was easy, everyone would do it.


8. You don’t have a (good) website.

A killer website is always useful for success and greatness. But if you don’t have one, you have options. If your current crappy website needs a redesign, hire someone to redesign it.

Meanwhile, you can promote, brand, and even sell from a free blog site. Post on other people’s blogs, but never promote yourself without permission. There are clever ways to sell on social media platforms.

Many people make money from affiliate marketing, which allows revenue to flow to you after you recommend products and services to your distribution list.

9. You’re too tired.

Being tired all the time is not normal.

Good health is important and certainly makes it easier to be great. Sufficient rest is part of good health. Go to bed earlier, if necessary, but establish a working rhythm that feels like success.


10. You’re just not confident enough.

There are two ways a human being comes into intelligence: genetic predisposition and learned behavior. Confidence is a learned behavior.

Listen to self-help programs and motivational messages. These total strangers will say things to you that your loved ones will not. It sounds implausible, but if you listen often enough to the right people, you will begin to believe there is greatness in you. And you know what? There is!

Initially known as “a good way to meet chicks,” Facebook is now a solid promotional tool that moves millions of dollars in products and services all over the world.  And for the most part, it’s free.

You’d think people would be adding people to their FB network like crazy, yet the average FB user only has around 165 friends.  Amazing.


Facebook tip: Connect with people who have more friends than you

If you’re too lazy to build your own network, there is another strategy you can use. 

Hitch your wagon to people with bigger wagons, by friending folks with large networks.  I’ve even started a Facebook sub-list I call 3K, which indicates which of my FB buddies has at least 3,000 friends.

By the way, I probably have a bigger wagon than you, which means that by connecting with me, you are increasing your marketing reach without even taking time to build your list.

As I’ve indicated, this shouldn’t be your “Plan A,” but it works.  Plan A is to build your list by making more personal connections on your own.

Set the hook when selling

A while back, I did something most business people never do.

I started giving away my products and services.  And it’s the best thing I ever did for my consulting business.

Every Monday at 4:00 ET, I jump on a conference call to dispense advice on everything from Internet marketing to event planning.  The call-in codes are below.

Many callers have booked me to speak at various conferences and fundraisers.  I help them save time, increase attendance, promote their events, and get the most from their marketing efforts.

Some callers have yet to do business with me.  They are prospects who often convert after being on the call.

You should consider giving away your products and services.  If you cannot afford to give away any of your current products, think about developing a product that you can make available.


“Set the hook” by sample selling

Fisherman know that you have to “set the hook” when the fish nibbles at the bait.  Setting the hook is that small jerky motion that pulls the hook through the fish gill.  The hook is a reversed-barbed piece of metal that makes it difficult for the fish to escape once he takes the bait.

That’s what free information and free products do.  I call it “sample selling” because its like giving folks a free sample of what you do so they become interested in spending money with you.

It’s an easy marketing strategy to implement and everyone wins.

Another fabulous Fourth of July weekend is upon us.  Happy Fourth!

This year, we’ll blow up scads of fireworks and consume countless burgers and hot dogs–all commodity items that defy much serious expectations.

So when is a hot dog, not just a hot dog?

When it’s an event.

This is because of something called product differentiation.

Product–or service–differentiation can help consumers tell you apart from the competition.   When people appreciate the difference they become interested in doing business with you.

Yet, differentiation can be a challenge, especially when it comes to mundane products such as hot dogs.  Brothers George and Rich Shea have brilliantly differentiated the Nathan’s brand of hot dogs by holding an annual hot dog eating contest.

The contest, started in 1961, is now televised on ESPN.  Every year, publications such as the New York Times run articles that provided thousands of dollars in free advertising.

When is a hot dog not a hot dog?  When it’s the featured product of  a televised hot dog eating contest–every July 4.  Brilliant!

Michael Angelo Caruso uses blog to get interviewsMany people complain that they don’t get any juice from their blogging activity.

The problem is usually related to one of two issues.

1) Not enough people are seeing the blog.
2) The blog topic isn’t interesting enough.

By “interesting,” I mean relevant and by “relevant,” I mean something that is in the news. Extra points, if the blog topic is related to what you’re marketing.

Never forget that the Internet works on keywords, so your blog has a better chance of being read if it contains the most popular keywords of that particular day. A good place to get your daily keywords is from news sites, such as www.CNN.com.

Here’s how this formula worked to a tee for me this week.

Peter Falk, TV’s Lt. Columbo, died late last week. I posted a blog about how Columbo’s famous “just one more thing” line became an effective selling tactic and pushed it out to my social media platforms.

Radio show morning host, Michael Patrick Shiels, a connection in my vast social media network, read the blog and had his producer contact me for an interview.

(By the way, another author/speaker in my city also had the idea to post about Columbo, but he incorrectly spelled the name “Colombo,” which no doubt reduced his number of original views.  Spelling counts, people.)

Of course, once the interview was booked, I reposted the same topic along with the new development to squeeze extra juice out of the topic.  I might even create an “epilogue post” after the interview is completed.

Is social media not fun for you anymore?

Lots of people are frustrated by Facebook and confused by Twitter.  They’re spending lots of time posting and setting up business pages, but not getting much for their efforts.

When things aren’t going right, it can be helpful to look at what you’re doing wrong.  I can help you in at least two ways.

You don’t “Facebook with purpose.”

You push the same updates to every platform.

You don’t edit your photos before posting.

You’re not producing enough content.

The best keyword is “research”

Search has become a very important business tool.

Businesses all over the fruited plain are constantly trying to figure out the best keyword to use on their Web sites.

The best keyword for all of us, it turns out, is “research.”

And search engine optimization (SEO), despite its complicated moniker, offers some very simple marketing lessons.  I’m reminded of something my brother Dave Caruso taught me a while back when we were trying to improve the effectiveness of my Web site.

My site has always had a number of products and programs related to “self improvement.”

Dave, a great linear thinker and fantastic “systems” guy, did a few quick Google searches to compare how often people search “self help” vs. “self improvement.”

He found that the following variations gave these totals (results in millions):

Keyword search # of hits
self-help                             89,700
self help                                 89, 600
self improvement              30,200
self-improvement             21,200

This was HUGE and I immediately wanted to change my site to take advantage of this discovery.

Then, Dave checked the number of hits for one more term:  “personal improvement.”  At the time, those key words showed 124,000,000–far more than the other key word phrases!

“Personal improvement” was the keyword phrase to optimize.  Thanks, brother!

When doing SEO, make sure you do research to discover which key words and phrases will rank highly.  You may be surprised!
