Michael Angelo Caruso and Oscar blog greatEveryone has the ability to be great.  In fact, greatness is probably the most natural of all achievements.  So why don’t more of us achieve greatness?  One reason is that we get in our own way.  Another reason is that we often don’t receive the right amount of encouragement.

By the way, there are varying degrees of greatness.  You may never win an Oscar, for example, but you may get to hold one.  :-)

Here are the top ten excuses for not being great, along with some quick  advice on how you can achieve greatness.

1. You don’t know how.

Huh? You’re kidding, right? You don’t know how to do something? I have one word for you: Google.

Need a book? Your public library has thousands and you won’t have to wait in line because nobody goes there.

Need tutelage? Hire a coach.

Information is more accessible now than any other point in history and most of it is free. Get good at accessing what you need to know. It’s your ticket to greatness.


2. You don’t know the right people.

As with information, people are more accessible than ever before. Nearly anyone you need to know can be found on Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin or YouTube.

Make yourself a little more available and you’re half way there.

The average person actually stops trying to be likable as he or she gets older. Most people on Facebook sign up about 145 friends and stop. Become a bit more psychologically attractive and you will connect with the right people.


3. You don’t have the money.

The first way is to reduce expenses and save the extra money for whatever you’d like or need. Create a strict budget, and set aside a portion of your income. This may include sacrificing, a lost art among a society that strongly identifies with comfort.

The second way to have more money is to earn more. See “comfort” above. You can earn more by getting a better paying job, also known as “leaving your comfort zone.” Earning more often means working harder or at least applying yourself.

Would you like to double the amount of money you earn now? Get a second job! If you really want the money, you’ll do it.

One of the easiest ways to earn money is to proffer your intellectual property. You can do this by creating a short e-book that offers information on how to do something. You’re probably really good at something, right?

Tell others how to do it in a Word document, save the document to a .pdf that you can sell online and off. Sell ten e-books at $10 each and you’ll have an extra $100.

It doesn’t matter who you are, where you live or what the economical climate is like. Money is all around you. Go get it.


4. Someone else is already doing it.

Which came first, Copyblogger or Problogger? Groupon or Living Social? Dyson or Hoover? Yahoo or Hotmail?

You don’t know? Very few will people will care if you’re not first to market as long as your offering has a unique and worthwhile value.

A guy named Elisha Gray filed for a patent on a new invention called the telephone three hours after Alexander Graham Bell.

Count on it. Someone, somewhere is already doing what you’re doing. Work around them.


5. You’ll get to it later.

Maybe you’ll be great later. But history teaches us that life introduces all sorts of distractions in the game of life.

Face it, you’re only going to get busier.

Now is the time to put “greatness” on your calendar. Schedule it, then accomplish it. It’s called “greatness” partly because it’ll make you feel great!


6. You’re not ready for that level of success.

Success is a head game of sorts.

You’re trying to achieve something new, so how do you ever really know if you’re ready? What does “ready” even mean?

Stop making excuses and realize you’ll like life better when you’re in a better place.

Oh, you’re ready, trust me. And if greatness occurs and you’re not ready, you’ll get ready in a hurry.


7. There are too many obstacles.

This is true, but it’s not a good excuse for dodging greatness.

Heroes do things that others are unwilling or unable to do.

To find the treasure, you must be born into misfortune, get beat up by bad guys, be betrayed by your best friend, find love and lose it, and have a really bad accident.

And then, after you’re totally exhausted, you get to slay a dragon.

Hey, if being a hero was easy, everyone would do it.


8. You don’t have a (good) website.

A killer website is always useful for success and greatness. But if you don’t have one, you have options. If your current crappy website needs a redesign, hire someone to redesign it.

Meanwhile, you can promote, brand, and even sell from a free blog site. Post on other people’s blogs, but never promote yourself without permission. There are clever ways to sell on social media platforms.

Many people make money from affiliate marketing, which allows revenue to flow to you after you recommend products and services to your distribution list.

9. You’re too tired.

Being tired all the time is not normal.

Good health is important and certainly makes it easier to be great. Sufficient rest is part of good health. Go to bed earlier, if necessary, but establish a working rhythm that feels like success.


10. You’re just not confident enough.

There are two ways a human being comes into intelligence: genetic predisposition and learned behavior. Confidence is a learned behavior.

Listen to self-help programs and motivational messages. These total strangers will say things to you that your loved ones will not. It sounds implausible, but if you listen often enough to the right people, you will begin to believe there is greatness in you. And you know what? There is!

Steve Jobs Michael Angelo Caruso blog Steve Jobs was not known as a sentimental softie, yet his passing is still a tender memory for people all over the world.  Clearly, his death has gotten a lot of us to think about how we spend our lives and what we do with our time.

Humans are creatures of habit. We are more likely to do things we’ve done before than to try something new. We drive the same route to work every day, park in the same spot when we get there, and eat the same types of lunches from week to week.

This “routine-groove-rut” is exactly the kind of patterned behavior that prevents us from making new memories.  Here are 5 Cool Ideas on how to create new memories.

1.  Living in the past doesn’t create memories.  
People who dwell on the past often develop a victim mentality about life.  Victims perceive life to be a series of negative occurrences because of things that have happened to them.

Their attitude seems to be “People have always taken advantage of me, so I’m not interested in meeting new people.”  Old scripts can be keeping you from enjoying new material.

2.  Invite new memories by rewriting your slate.

Most of us are indelibly imprinted early in life.  Philosopher, John Locke wrote that, as youngsters, our minds are “tabula rasa” or a blank slate.  Early on, people write on our slates, helping us create memories.

Some of us have trouble writing over those old memories.  When you can rewrite your slate, you can easily add new memories.  Computer experts might describe rewriting your slate as overwriting your disk.

3.  Accept that new invitation.

The men identified themselves as secret service agents traveling with then President George Herbert Walker Bush.  My friend told me that the agents invited her to run with the President and his entourage the next morning.

She passed on the offer.  I asked her why she declined such a unique opportunity and my friend said, “I guess I didn’t feel like it.” Doing new things avails us to new memories, so make it a habit to step out of your routine.

Memories are generated by a process behavioral psychologists refer to as “experiential learning.”  New experiences, of course, are a form of imprinting, which helps us to create memories. Routines do not promote newness.

4.  The present is sometimes too predictable.   
People who only think about the present condition are so caught up in routines that they cannot seem to try new things.  In their determined effort to maintain status quo, they resist new opportunities, thus stifling the creation of new memories.

5.  Live as if you don’t have much time left.  
Impresario, Steve Jobs, urged us to not live other people’s lives. Do what you want to do.  Do it now.  Sociologists have discovered that people near death have an overwhelmingly common regret about their life.  They usually regret not trying more new things like traveling to foreign countries and meeting more people.

What have you always wanted to do? What would you do this year if you knew it would be your last year? Use the answers to these questions as incentive to generate new memories.

Happy Father’s Day…on Monday

Even if you spend quality time with dad this Sunday, Monday will actually be Father’s Day.

Sunday will be filled with Father’s Day traditions, such as a good meal, fun activities, good stories, inside jokes about family members, and maybe a little family drama.

After all, drama is a family tradition, too, right?

But, Monday is Father’s Day, too, because that’s when many of us come to understand how important dad is. 


You’ll think more about dad the day after

On Monday, about 24 hours after Father’s Day, great numbers of people will (again) admit that they love dear old dad more each year and never want to say “goodbye” to him.

On Monday, many of us will realize that dad’s health is failing a bit more quickly than they realized and that time is short.

And on Monday, many folks will realize that they are not open-ended when it comes to cleaning up long-standing arguments and helping dad get his “paperwork” in order.

Some of that paperwork may involve getting his great stories in writing or on video.

Finally, if you are a dad–or a mom–it will be Monday when you decide to create legacy for your children.

The best keyword is “research”

Search has become a very important business tool.

Businesses all over the fruited plain are constantly trying to figure out the best keyword to use on their Web sites.

The best keyword for all of us, it turns out, is “research.”

And search engine optimization (SEO), despite its complicated moniker, offers some very simple marketing lessons.  I’m reminded of something my brother Dave Caruso taught me a while back when we were trying to improve the effectiveness of my Web site.

My site has always had a number of products and programs related to “self improvement.”

Dave, a great linear thinker and fantastic “systems” guy, did a few quick Google searches to compare how often people search “self help” vs. “self improvement.”

He found that the following variations gave these totals (results in millions):

Keyword search # of hits
self-help                             89,700
self help                                 89, 600
self improvement              30,200
self-improvement             21,200

This was HUGE and I immediately wanted to change my site to take advantage of this discovery.

Then, Dave checked the number of hits for one more term:  “personal improvement.”  At the time, those key words showed 124,000,000–far more than the other key word phrases!

“Personal improvement” was the keyword phrase to optimize.  Thanks, brother!

When doing SEO, make sure you do research to discover which key words and phrases will rank highly.  You may be surprised!

3 tricks for repurposing content

I also conduct monthly teleseminars, post tons of video on my YouTube and Vimeo channels and have created over 75 information products.

People often ask me how I get it all done.  Sometimes I wonder, too!


My favorite magic trick

One of my “tricks” involves repurposing content.  It’s a useful technique for anyone who works as a leader or supervisor, salesperson, customer service rep or whatever.

When you repurpose your great content, your information becomes accessible to more people in more convenient ways.  When your relevant content shows up in multiple places, YOU become more familiar, and people start thinking of you as an industry expert.  Pretty cool!

Do you ever give presentations?  Here are three easy ways to make your talk available in different modalities:

1) Record your live presentation with a digital recorder like those sold at Radio Shack. Then, import the sound file to a free audio editing program such as “Audacity” and burn audio CDs to giveaway or sell.

2) Record a three-minute highlight of your speech with a Flip video camera and post the clip on YouTube. Be sure to display your Web site on the “bottom third” of the screen to drive traffic to your Web site.

3) Publish an e-book version of your speech. Use voice recognition software to create a transcript or keystroke the speech into a Word doc (if you use a PC) and convert the document into a .pdf.

Oh, and congratulations! When you do #3, you’ll officially be a published author!

Facebook is not Internet marketing

Let’s be serious.

If you’re marketing on Facebook but not on Twitter (TW), you’re wasting your time.  Why?  Because the Internet works in the aggregate, that’s why.

A healthy Facebook following means little compared to a healthy following on the Big Three social media platforms–FB, TW, and Linkedin (LI), with a YouTube presence added to the mix.

Each of these platforms offers something special to the branding process, more colors, if you will.  You wouldn’t fill your wardrobe with only navy blue shirts and pants, would you?

Twitter, for example, is more important than Facebook and Linkedin combined, for example, because search engines such as Google crawl individual tweets.  This is extremely important to driving traffic to your Web site!

Essentially, we’re talking about doing things that drive traffic to your Web site and money to your bank account.  This is done by systematically developing your brand using important, albeit inexpensive web online platforms, so beware of “social media experts”  who only want to help you with Facebook because “that’s all you need.”

Hey, speakers–Here are 3 tips to improve presentations

I often compare the art of presenting to a golf swing.  Both activities have a lot going on–and a lot that can go wrong.

Here are a few speaking tips to take your speaking to another level:

1. Personally greet people before you begin speaking. You’ll be much more effective if you build rapport with individual audience members in advance of your talk.  This is also a great way to settle your nerves, if you find yourself anxious prior to speaking.

2. Speak to the four different personality styles in your audience. Thinkers like to hear statistics, so give them facts and figures.  Directors like you to get to the bottom line; be succinct for them.  Relaters want you to identify with them, so tell stories.  Socializers want to have fun and laugh, so don’t take yourself too seriously.

3. End the speech using the same words and phrases you used at the beginning of your talk. This technique is called “bookending” and it’s the hallmark of a professional speaker.  Bookending helps you finish your talk with style and flair.

I just interviewed Bill Pirtle, my new bff, on how to save money with credit card processing.

He’s my new best friend because he showed me how to save a bunch of money on my monthly credit card processing statement.

Let’s review:  Bill Pirtle showed me how to save money on my MONTHLY statement, which I receive every 30 days, 12 MONTHS per year, EVERY YEAR that I own a business (the rest of my life).  That’s a lotta green.

Q:  What is one of the biggest mistake business owners make when signing with a credit card processor?
A:  When they focus on the rate alone.

Q:  What’s wrong with focusing on the rate?
A:  Many processing agents use a “teaser” rate to get you to sign while placing up to 40 other fee types into the contract. These fees include transaction fees, authorization fees, batch fees, AVS fees, statement fees, annual fees, PCI Fees and some are even adding something called an “IRS Reporting fee”.

Q:  How can merchants tell if they need a review of their processing?
A:  There are several signs including:  unexplained fees and surcharges on most of your transactions.

Add all of your fees from each section of your statement divide total by net sales and then multiply by 100. This gives the effective rate, the percentage of your sales that you pay in fees. If fees higher than you thought you should be paying, you need a review.

Q:  True or false, reductions in rate are always best way to save money?
A:  False!  Reviewing a contract is more than reviewing rates. It is to review the policies and procedures of processing credit cards. Finding cause of non-qualified transactions and correcting can reduce fees several times more than just changing rates.

Q:  Besides rates, what is something business owners need to know?
A:  There is no such thing as a free terminal. A “free” terminal will result in added fees somewhere in the contract.

Random act of customer service backfires

Here’s the story of how a random act of customer service completely backfired . . .

Present Like a Pro DVD by Michael Angelo CarusoA while back, I released a DVD titled, Present Like a Pro (PLP).  This video of my best presentation tips turned out much better than expected, thanks to quality vendors.

Present Like a Pro continues to sell at a brisk pace, especially at during my Present Like a Pro training sessions, such as the one I’m giving March 3 in Troy, Michigan.

Nonetheless, I was shocked at what happened during my product launch.

My launch concept was inspired by two marketing campaigns I had studied:

1)  Russell Brunson’s “free plus shipping” technique and

2) The Hyatt Regency hotel chain, which at the time was offering “random acts of customer service” to guests.

The DVD was priced at $49, but I decided give it away to the first 1,000 people on my list who showed interest.  This seemed like a fabulous idea, but I was truly shocked at what happened next!

Random act of customer service backfires!

My data base consists primarily of business executives, middle managers, salespeople, and entrepreneurs such as speaker and authors.  I thought a $49 DVD offered free would kill.  But, initially, it didn’t.

Here’s what happened.

A few people were paranoid about the free offer.  An East Coast woman who has been on my list for YEARS, called to make sure the offer wasn’t a phishing scam.   Noted.

A substantial number of people didn’t follow instructions, resulting in lots of back-end customer service support.  In other words, the auto-processes we set up actually created work for my team and me.  Oops!  Noted.

Finally–and here’s the shocker–after receiving my offer of a free DVD valued at $49, a stunning number of people quit my list!

I couldn’t be more surprised!  My “random act of kindness” was causing me to lose customers!  Er . . .noted

I suppose some of these folks never give presentations.  Perhaps some of them were not interested in self-improvement.  Whatever the reason, my team and I went back to the drawing board to create — a second marketing campaign that we’re using to this day.

To date, the Present Like a Pro DVD has generated thousands of dollars in sales and since I continue to market the product to my distribution list, much of that money has come from people who turned down the free offer during the product launch!  Noted.

Marketing lesson #153: When customers don’t recognize a good deal that you’ve offered, it’s your fault.

Here’s a great way to sell without seeming like a salesperson.  It’s called “article marketing.”

Article marketing tips with Michael Angelo CarusoThe first syllable of “article” is “art” and there is an art to creating useful content.  Article marketing is certainly more time consuming than posting a status update on your Facebook business page, but the payback can be huge.

If you can write, it’s best to create original content, but here’s how you can reconstitute info from articles written by others.

Copy/paste the content from one or two well-written articles into Notepad on your PC.  You can open the Notepad program by clicking Start/Programs/Accessories.  Notepad will strip out all the hidden code.

Copy/paste the content from Notepad into a fresh Word document.   Then, start rewriting by moving paragraphs around, reversing sentence order, and doing word substitution.  You want to change about 75% of the article to make the article your own and avoid plagiarizing.

Sometimes, it’s a good idea to retain some brilliant quote or well-turned phrase from the article you have not written.  It’s okay to do this if you provide attribution by including the author’s name, title and company or location.

Finally, it’s important to identify and include your favorite key words in in the article.  Key words, of course, will help people find your article when they search the Internet.  Make sure these key words are in three places:

a)    The title of the article
b)    The first paragraph—ideally the first sentence—of the article.
c)    The last paragraph—ideally the last sentence—of the article.

Here are 5 ways to repurpose the content of your new article and get the most from your online marketing efforts:

1)    Post the article on your Web site.
2)    Post a version of the article as a Facebook Note.
3)    Use a 140 character excerpt of the article as a status update or Tweet.
4)    Post the article on a free article depot site, such as www.EzineArticle.com
5)    Create a .pdf of the article and post it on your Linkedin page.

Articles that are written in an “evergreen” format can be reposted and reshared, if they don’t contain dated information.

Article marketing is a fantastic way to sell without selling.
